Should This Really Be Rejected For Baddark?

Sun Dec 19, 2004 5:35 am

Hey guys, at the moment I have two photos in the Johan queue that are waiting to be appealed so at the moment I can't throw this picture in there. I shot this pic last night:

https://www.airliners.net/addphotos/rejections/big/NativeAir_N350AZ_041218_1a.jpg

So while I'm waiting to be able to appeal this photo, I want to get your take on it; should it have been rejected for bad dark? Here's the circumstance: I'm as close as I could get to the helicopter, personnel wouldn't let me get any closer, second helicopter landing behind (hence the bright beam of light from behind), dust being blown up, crappy orange streetlights (don't know the name for 'em) light up the rest of the scene. I balanced the colors the best I could and adjusted the curves for best detail. What do you think--worth the appeal? or maybe change something and reupload?

Definetly a borderline case, as it appears you didn't have much light to work with at all.
And all at once the crowd begins to sing: Sometimes the hardest thing and the right thing are the same

Nope...I forgot to mention 2.5sec, f4.5 @ISO 200...on a tripod of course!  Smile

Did you mark the "DARK" category?

I hit 'auto levels' on PS, then played with the contrast a bit, it looked much better. Might give that a try.

Are you marking the "Night/Dusk" category on the upload page? Also, what was your "personal" rejection message?

Sebastian
I guess that's what happens in the end, you start thinking about the beginning.

I received no info on why I got "badpersonal". But as for the "baddark" all the screener said was "still dark". And yes, I did click "Night/Dusk/Dawn". Any screeners want to enlighten this baddark photographer?

I agree, it looks a bit dark. Try exposing it longer next time.

Yep I agree. Way too dark, the chopper is not good enough visible. It is in the shade of the headlights. Quality could be better also. And yes it is night, duh...

Just browse the database and look at a couple of nightshots to get the idea:

It's a good shot, I quite like it! I doubt it'll get accpeted on here but that doesn't mean it's a bad shot... Get an 8x12 print of it, hang it on your wall and enjoy it!

Thats a shame. A wonderful Native American Air Ambulance photo. Where in Phoenix was this? (assuming it was Phoenix area).

I would have loved to see that photo in the database, but at least I was privileged enough to catch it even though it was rejected.

Thumbs up!

That is a very nice photo. This site is doing itself a disservice by rejecting it.

Nice Picture... I would have accepted it...

crappy orange streetlights (don't know the name for 'em)
This is where I come in... You must be talking about the High Pressure Sodium bulbs that emit an orangish-peachish color glow. More and more of these lamps are being used as they are brighter than Mercury Vapor Lamps. Hence why most airports use them (Some use Metal Halide Lamps --Metalarc--)

Thanks Rlwynn & BR715-A1-30 for your kind words. Continue to check my photos, since I've got a couple good ones (should be good anyway) on their way. See ya.
