My god why can`t BAA learn any lessons from MAN and realise that reopening the viewing area is not a threat!!!

I personally wish they would re-open the viewing platform but put a 100% ban on spotting etc around the perimeter fence, although I know many of you will disagree  Smile/happy/getting dizzy

If we are all in one designated area and not spread all around the perimeter fence etc any suspicous behavior would be easier to detect. Plus if they are that worried how much would it cost to have a security Officer manning a desk at the entrance to the viewing area so they could check the ID of all person`s visiting. BAA must make money from the rent they charge for the shop that`s located at the viewing platform so that should cover the additional cost, plus they could also charge a flat fee of £1.

Just a last thought has anyone here actually wrote to BAA regarding the viewing platform. BAA have been very vocal regarding the removal of the Gatwick Express and have been encouraging people to e-mail them with their support for the service, so maybe they might listen (but wouldn`t hold my breath).

Ryan,

One reason that it is unlikely to reopen is that expensive modifications would have to be made to comply with the Disability Discrimination Act. As they have provided the visitor centre on Bath Road they can say in all honesty that they have provided facilities.

You could be right, however I thought the Disability Discrimination Act requires reasonable changes in order to allow disabled access and rightly so, however we all know that their are many locations were it would be impossible or too expensive/complicated to justify any modifications.

For example the London Monument is only accessible by able bodied people. Does this act mean that they would have to close this attraction to all visitors as it cannot cater for disabled people. I feel this legislation has been rushed through too fast without considering the ramifications.

What do others think?

Firstly, since the viewing area is closed to everyone there is no discrimination towards those members of society whose mobility is impaired (that term comes from the DDA course I went on in November Innocent ).

Secondly, there is the issue of the viewing area being too close to the Terminal 2 airconditioning ducts for the HMG's comfort.

Not trying to deflect the blame from BAA here, although they have been a lot more tolerant of people using the T2 car park in recent months.

Any examples of T2 Shots guys?

My last few times at LHR I've stayed on the perimeter and not bothered with the centre.

Cheers!

I have been at LHR for spotting purposes 1 time in my life (during a school trip, i had the chance to go there with a friend)
First we have searched for ages to find a good spot...
When we finally found a good spot (Yes, the carpark) we where verry happy because we saw for example an Il-96 at the ramp and some other exotic planes we don`t see at AMS...
But we stood there for an hour and then some security guy came the us with the friendly request to leave..... Just when the Il-96 was about to take off...  Angry
Even a sweet sugar coated story didn`t do the job and we had to leave at once... The only alternative was to go (If my memory serves me correctly) the third flour of the building (which has a poor view).
That was really the most sad moment of our whole school trip  Crying

Did u guys never had an experience like this one???

Then again im sure an airport with many security scanning machines for hand baggage could afford to put an old replaced one for people wishing to access the viewing deck like FRA......and maybe an old metal detector.....that to me would be sufficient enough to stop anything the BAA dont want to get up there up there, if you know what I mean. £1-£2 entry is plenty and id be happy to pay (yes even if I was a local) this in turn would pay for their investment and keep them happy over security issues.

Regarding the entrance fee covering running costs, I think part of the problem is high attendance would be more or less guaranteed at the weekend, but during the week, it would be dead. Therefore, any security features, (as machines, guards) may not necessarily pay for itself.

Problem is to many steps stairs and no lifts ramps for disabled people so BAA closed it to save being taken to Court by Disabled access groups! SO we all loose out!
