Ussr Or Russia?

Fri Apr 22, 2005 5:04 am

There are certain air force images in the db where the operator is being stated as Russia like this one:

I know that this was taken only recently but did it belong to the USSR or the Russian Air Force? I see that it carries the famous Soviet red star.

I've already had an in-depth debate with the editors here.

In airliners.net, it's Russia - Air Force.
It's too difficult to state Soviet - Air Force or the Soviet Union - Air Force.
'Soviet' cannot exist in here. It's simplified for file searching, although, the
result offered can be inaccurate.

Quoting OD720 (Thread starter):

It belonged to the Soviet Air Force. If the site wants to be correct, it should be noted as such. What if this T-4 was photographed not in Monino, but at a military airfield in Armenia? Would it be marked as Armenia - Air Force? I think you know where this is coming from Vatche?  Wink

In my opinion this should be USSR/Soviet Union rather than Russia as it does not have the Russian flag on the aircraft, and was clearly a product of that former nation.

It is of course now in the ownership of Russia, but bears the insignia of a former country.

Related issues surround preserved aircraft in Germany wearing the insignia of East Germany and those in Slovakia that wear the markings of Czechoslovakia which are identical to the present Czech Air Force!

The Russian situation is particularly difficult as I imagine many aircraft were never painted with the Russian flag after the split.
