Timed Exposures At Night

Tue Sep 13, 2005 9:51 am

(I picked one of my better looking photos to use as thread starter.)
What is your best timed exposure night photo?

This one caught the eye of the Continental representative for Edmonton and Vancouver. I had poster sized 20"x30" calendars made up as a result.

Non aviation, but still I think my best night exposure:

Mafia corpses?

Has to be this one, love the reflections on the ground, took a lot of jiggery pokery to position the light directly behind the tail. I like how its mainly normal from bristows white lights and some of BAAs orange is creeping in onto the nose

I love the colours and contrast between the curve of the balloon and the straight-edged buildings. Also nice to get Belgacom's HQ in the same shot as Belgacom's balloon.

Mine would be this one. I like the wet, reflecting tarmac a lot.

This took some time to set up, shoot, and edit. Most aircraft were too high up but finally an MD82 used only half runway and rotated just where I Wanted.

These are my three favourite nightshots. The following two were taken handheld with a Canon EOS 300D and Canon's EF 50mm f/1.8. The AR-B732 was taken with ISO 800, the AF-B772 with ISO 400.

The last photo was also taken with a Canon EOS 300D, but this time in combination with Canon's EF 17-40L f/4 at ISO 400.

Mfz, if you don't mind my asking, what was your shutter time on the AR 732?
I just got the 50mm 1.8 and haven't tried it at night yet, but that is a great shot with it.

I surely don't mind you asking.  Smile Just checked the EXIF-data of the photo in question: exposure-time was 1/8. However I must admit that it takes a really steady hand and quite some practice to get good handheld-results with exposure-times that long.

Just give it a couple of tries, and I am sure you will be very happy with the lens. It offers suberb image-quality, is tack-sharp (it's a prime) - and for the price it's a great deal. Have fun with it!

Cheers,
Mike

15 sec exposure. 5 second to get the whole plane, 5 seconds zooming in and 5 seconds for the nose.

Nice topic Richard! How have you been?!

As for me, my favorite is my most popular shot yet:

Since I spend a lot of time on the ramp at night, I have tons of opportunities to shoot, and I take advantage of it!
This is the most difficult shot I've taken at night:

Indeed bit hard to get a good spot for a nice and interesting shot...think if you want the real awesome night shots you need to get on the inside  Smile as in on the tarmac with your tripod!

I tried it through the terminal window and it worked out okay... Not the best but think its okay  Smile

This plane comes into Abbotsford every few months to do prison transfers. If you try to take pictures in the morning when they're doing the transfer, you're likely to get one of the guards coming over to have a chat with you, as one of my friends found out  Wink
