Nice shot Kyle!

In the photo dead center below the aircraft, the blond guy is Jason Thacher, immediately to his left is Kyle Matson, and immediately to his left is me!

Negative to the working for southwest, actually we were there for the media day because kyle is a genius and got us access, and while waiting for the plane (right after it landed but before it got to the gate) someone came running up the jetway and told us that we were all gonna get on the ramp. So us plus 50 other people carrying huge HDTV cameras for all the local news agencies stormed down the jetway and the stairs and out onto the ramp. Also got flightdeck access and got to chat with the pilots, they were pretty cool.

Funniest thing, the guy going through security right in front of me was carrying a D2H and right in front of everybody after we cleared he dropped the thing. Hey, at least my camera wasn't a 5G investment!

That is pretty cool you guys got to see that, good job on the networking!

That is kind of interesting though. I wonder what DIA and the TSA thinks about Southwest breaking all of the rules about letting people onto the ramp.

I wonder if they would have allowed all those people out there if that guy in El-Paso had walked into that engine the day before Southwest's media event. Just seems like a huge liability issue in many ways to have that many people out there around a single gate.

Airlines are allowed to escort people on the ramp. They were not breaking "all of the rules". It's a common occurrence to allow a group of "media" on the ramp during such events. People who needed to know where advised I'm sure. It's all legit.

Yeah but DIA has rules where you can only escort so many people and I know it is nowhere near 50. I think one is the limit unless you have a special badge, then I think you can do three at a time.

Were all these people sent through security and screened properly? Were they given ear protection and trained on the dangers of the ramp? Did they have to sign waivers? There are a million ways to get hurt on the ramp.

Just wondering how Southwest gets around a rule that other airlines have to obey? Perhaps DIA created some sort of waiver to them due to their little event?

If prearranged with the airport there are no limits for events such as this.

If they were at the gate area, then yes properly screened. There are millions of ways to get hurt walking down the street. No, usually at events like this they do not hand out ear protection or give training. With proper procedures and staff to oversee the crowd it's no more dangerous than taking that walk down the street.

All of this is prearranged (usually) with the airport. No one is getting around a rule. Again, it's 100% legit. Stop worrying so much, you sound like my mother  Smile

DLKAPA don't worry about it all these negatives are from people who wouldn't think twice about all the rules if they had the chance.

"want to come out and see this event?"
"oh... what will the TSA say? who will screen me? got earmuffs?"

get real and stop being such killjoys. Given half the chance you would all be out there.
After Monday and Tuesday even the calendar says WTF...

I'm glad you guys enjoy the shot. I was waiting for a flight to Atlanta and there was lots of commotion about Southwest making their first arrival shortly. Luckily I had my camera and I was able to get a shot of the arrival through the terminal glass. You guys were pretty fortunate to get to be outside and Kyle's shot turned out great.

Who are "all these people"? Only one person is asking questions about the rules. Certainly hope your post wasn't meant for me.

Not being negative, just being real, I used to work there, I knew the rules at the time and followed them. When I was there this would not have been allowed, it seems the rules have changed for the good! I just hope the TSA sent the bill for security to Southwest instead of the taxpayers.

Either way, you guys got a great shot, and your timing was perfect to be able to see this since there aren't too many water cannon salutes at DIA.

Good job and congrats!

I was with them while they were requesting permission. DIA was being sticklers, but at the last second, we got word that they had approved it.

Quoting Atomother (Reply 8):
Yeah but DIA has rules where you can only escort so many people and I know it is nowhere near 50. I think one is the limit unless you have a special badge, then I think you can do three at a time.

It is 6. We had one badged employee for every 6 of us, and they escorted us to the ramp as well.

Pretty much everyone to the right of Jason in the photo is an SWA employee. They were all transfers, no new hires, so they all know the rules of the ramp. Starting with Jason, and to the left of him was media. They asked us to remain behind the "yellow line" because of the issues you already mentioned. Nevertheless, there were no where near 50 people.

Quoting Atomother (Reply 8):
Were all these people sent through security and screened properly?

Yes.

Quoting Atomother (Reply 8):

Aw come on! Do you think when Frontier introduced their new livery, they trained media photographers from Channel 7 and 9 on the dangers of the ramp, provided them ear protection and made them sign liability forms? I doubt it, I bet like the media usually is, they were in and out of there as quickly as possible.

I know you used to work for F9 Tim, but it sounds like you really hate Southwest.

Best Regards, and I hope you took none of that too seriously!

That is why I brought this up in the first place. I know trying to get DIA to work with an airline on something like this is about as hard as parting the red sea.

Quoting Atomother (Reply 14):

That may be the root of all of it, ugggh, can't stand them! At least it was a blue paint scheme instead of that brown one. Now if that was a Frontier water cannon salute you guys caught then that would have been something good.

Seriously though, good shot you guys, it beats my shot of a water cannon salute at DIA. I hope you guys don't just show up for the glory shots only though. Keep going out there, I love to look at new photos from DIA but no one seems to go out there that much anymore.

Ok gotta be productive today, see what happens when the weather is:KBJC 192151Z 07008KT 1 1/4SM -SN VV003 M02/M02 A2983

See you guys out there sometime!

I'm going to try and get up more and more....I haven't been up recently except for Sunday (cloudy, crappy light), because I just finished 12 college apps. (phew) Due to an independent study, it is now part of my responsibility, though, so expect more uploads.
