Basically, I can buy the the XTI with a 18-55 lens for 850-900 dollars and the XT with same lensfor 100 less. Is it worth the extra hundred to get the XTI or sould i stick with the XT? Also, I am looking at the Sigma APO 135-400mm F4.5-5.6 DG for a long lens. How is that?

For that little difference in price I would get the 400D/XTi. The extra 2mp resolution may or may not make a difference to you, but the sensor dust reduction system certainly will and IMO it's worth it for this alone.

Instead of the Sigma, look at the Canon 70-300 IS lens. I have one Sigma lens, the 100-300 F4 which is excellent but the one you mention may disappoint you a little even though I haven't used it myself.

I would go for the 400D/XTi because it's a newer model and I think you'll have this camera for a few years. What do you plan to fill the gap between the 18-55 and 135-400mm there are 80mm missing. I have the 70-300 IS USM and I'm happy with it.

I would not go for the kit lens, spend somewhat more and buy the 28-105mm f3.5-4.5 USM II (it is much sharper) if you don't need the lower range from "28" down to "18mm"...

I am an F/A, and so will be taking interior pics for the most part. What do I need to look for in an A/C interior lens. Don't like the way the ultra-wide angle lens look like, but would like to take shots of our ecclectic interiors here at AC

The reason I looked at the Sigma was because I am looking for a long lens, and 300 is not enough. Also, I have a previous sigma and it worked great for film slr. How much does the 400D XTI cost?

When you're purchasing a camera, also keep in mind the resale value. The XTi will be worth more than the original XT, when you want to resale it. Possibly the $100 you paid more for, but it all adds up.

If you'd read what the Rebel XTi actually adds to the Rebel line then I think you'll be happy to pick that one. I bought my Digital Rebel XT back in June and was a little p'd to know that the new XTi would have an anti dust mechanism and firmware to help rid pics of dust spots automatically.

If I would need an extra body, I would personally take the 350D.
The reason is that the tests I've seen of the 400D vs. 350D show 350D as a better performer, noise wise.
But maybe I could be wrong, but I don't need 10.1 mil. pixels, that's it.

The 400D has the same 9 point AF system as the 30D. It also has a larger buffer than the 350D meaning that the write time is quicker.

I wouldn't personally spend more for that, though more grain...
And when do you use the 9 spots? I never use them, I've never found a use for them. What is the use for them?

So I hear, both the 400D and 30D are generally noisier than the 350D. Personally, I'd probably go for the 400D, because it certainly ain't gonna be a worse camera (overall) than the 350D. It's also a lot newer, so as mentioned, resale value will be higher.
I use a 350D and I must admit I've been extremely happy with it. I use a two-lens combination - 28-105 F3.5-4.5 USM Mk II (described somewhere above) and 70-200 F4 L. I find both lenses produce fabulous results. Below I've included two shots - the first taken with the 28-105 and the second with the 70-200. Both are unedited in photoshop, i.e. exactly as they came out of the camera.

Nice photos you have there Karl. What settings did you use for those photos? I also have the EOS350D and am fairly satisfied with it as well (on a few disappointing photo results though). I use the Canon EF90-300 1:4.5-5.6 USM lense. Does this lense create more softness in photos as I regularly have this problem with my photos (?) Is this a recommended lense or any tips on other better lenses?

thanks for the replies. I will most likely buy the 400D body only. I'm thinking of using some of my previous film lenses. I have a canon 28-75 mm and a sigma 70-300mm. Will these lenes give decent results when used on a digital camera? They produce good stuff on my Canon film sr.

I use the 70-200 F4 L which will give better results than the 90-300 - this is reflected in the cost. Your lens will be much softer, especially above 200mm, and the colour will seem (on close examination) somewhat muddier. I used to own the 75-300 USM III, which was effectively superceded by the lens you own. What do you use for wide angle and lower focal lengths?
Settings for these two shots, by the way, are:
Av F8
Ev -1/3
ISO 100
AI Servo focus
Colour Parameter 1
AWB
I have also fiddled with the colour composition slightly (in camera not in Photoshop) but I can't remember the exact settings.

I would imagine the Canon lens would be OK, however I reckon the Sigma will suffer from being soft in a similar way to the Canon 75-300 and 90-300.

Of course you have to bear in mind that tests are conducted under very controlled conditions and the possibility of aircraft being the subject is unlikely. Generally, under certain conditions (perhaps not involving aircraft), the 400D and 30D are believed to be ever-so-slightly noisier than the 350D. I'm sure, however, that the 400D more than makes up for this in other areas, although I would not recommend any 350D owners to upgrade.
On a final note, also remember that picture quality's all about the lens(es) you attach.

Hi Karl, I use similar settings as you mention above. As for the lenses, I only have the Canon EF90-300mm 1:4.5-5.6 USM lense and the EF-S 18-55mm lense (the standard lense that comes with the EOS350D package). I hear many people preferring the (Canon) EF70-200 L lense but the reason I have not bought this lense yet (besides the cost factor) is because of its range max of 200mm. Does this range matter a lot compared to the 300mm range on the EF90-300 USM lense (200mm vs. 300mm)? I have never tried out the L lenses yet but I constantly read that these lenses give much sharper photos. What else makes the L lenses attractive?

Put simply, nothing else besides image quality makes the L series better (and costlier), but that is really only ever the advantage of any expensive lens.
Don't forget, with the 1.6x crop factor of the 350D, your maximum zoom of 200mm actually becomes more like 320mm. I find shooting at anything above this very unreliable, as colour starts to deteriorate and distance/heat haze takes its toll. This is irrespective of lens quality, although it's less noticeable on quality glass. Besides, both the 75-300 USM and the 90-300 USM are known to suffer dramatically at focal lengths above about 200mm.
In all honesty, there have been rare occasions when a little more zoom would have been nice, but in my opinion the quality of my L lens more than compensates for this. It's all about quality versus power, and in my case I chose quality. I'd personally rather have great shots 95% of the time than mediocre shots 100% of the time.
I do have some comparison shots somewhere (don't forget I used to own a similar lens to you in the 75-300), so let me know if you want me to post them.
