An-225 At MAN!?

Mon Oct 02, 2006 1:33 am

Hi guys!

Just found this thread: An225 At MAN Today? (by ADB1 Oct 1 2006 in Civil Aviation)
Though already in the CivAv forum I think it belongs here too as it's directly related to spotting (=photographing).
Anybody got some good info as to the An225 stay at MAN as if it really stays there until Tuesday (Oct 3rd) I might organize a quick visit to MAN.

So it's coming directly from China. Had the pleasure to see it in SXF on Thursday during the first part of the China visit and it was just like WOW WOW WOW.

Wish you MAN (and all others who can make it there) all the best to catch this beast.

Here she is during the very moment of rotation direct infront of me - But be aware that this pic is linked to the "other" site

Georg - who is till impressed by this magnificant 6-holer.

Yes, apparently (and according to a reliable source) it will stay till Tuesday, when I suspect it will be the last departure from runway 24L before the lunchtime closure. I would imagine it will do what the An-22 did and depart at noon or just after - reason being it'll need a clear runway while it powers up for its usual 5 hours!!

According to manchesterspotters2 (and the manchester airport computer) , the aircraft will be leaving at 7am to Lagos via Tripoli in Libya, so anyone planning to see it had better get their skates on.....

Why does this always happen when I can't get over? Alex (myt322) told me about 3 hours before it was due in that it was coming. And now i can't get any time to get across tomorrow!!  hissyfit

If anyone could arrange it to do a couple of slow passes over the IOM I would be eternally grateful!! Big grin

Thanks for the headsup Andrew!

I hope the light will be good at 7am... I may just make the trip up from Derby. When she visited Derby last year the light was bloody awful for the take-off. Impressive to watch but no keepers for me.  Sad

Sorry folks, I've also posted this in the Civil Aviation forum 'cos I could do with a speedy response.

Anyone know where she's parked at the mo? I'm thinking if she's right down the bottom of T2 ramp there's a chance of a shot from the car park down there - through the fence but I have a compact specifically for these type of situations! If the sun shines, should be good down there from about 4.

Cheers

Rez, don't knock me off my push bike in the morning !!

Karl, it is parked on stand 80 which is easily visible from L13. Unfortunatly there is a big crooked lamp post right in the middle of the airframe Sad

Here's my wish list for tommorow:-

1. Good Light
2. No rain
3. 24L departure
4. All but the most dedicated photographers to conveniently forget about its existence!

Parking at EMA on the An-225s departure day was a nigthmare and that's a big paved road, unlike the single track lanes on the south side of Ringway! The temptation to park close by and cycle in is enormous!

Jid, is it close enough to the bottom of the T2 ramp to get a clear shot from the car park down at that end? Do you know the one I mean? It's at ground level at the western extremity of the T2 ramp. There is a large fence but I can poke my compact through it. Just wondering if it's far enough down, if it isn't then something will get in the way.

Rez the forecast is ok for tomorrow but that means nothing!
24L departure is 95% certain
Sunrise tomorrow is at 7.02am so hope for no cloud or a delay.

I will be on a silver mountain bike and think I will put my hi-viz jacket on, and then I will stick to the bridle paths I think Big grin

It's OK fellas, I got a response from another thread. It's parked in such a way that a shot from the western end would be impossible. I'll just have to take my chances in the morning.

On a brighter note, touch wood, when has any cargo aircraft ever gone on time at MAN?! Let's hope this one isn't the exception...!

The AN225 is scheduled to depart at 1200 from Runway 24L, effectively the last departure on the runway so that it can sit and run its engines without causing delays to subsequent departures as 24R will then be in use.

If this happens, it's as I suspected. Although 0700 isn't peak time for departures, there is a steady flow, so they ain't gonna want that beast running its engines for 15 minutes on the active T/O runway.

Should be down there tomorrow morning to see the monster. Whereabouts is it going to rotate does anyone reckon? I was thinking of going down somewhere near the red and white triangle, but how much weight will it be carrying?

My dad wants to go to the threshold, but I don't think it will make the most of an aircraft its size being stood so close.

I'd personally say it's gonna be airborne quite a way after the triangle, but even if in isn't it doesn't have an astounding rate of climb.

That's true! I'm not sure if it was carryng much as it left EMA but it was a very gentle and smoky climb out as I recall.

If I do manage to get over there I'd be tempted to get down to the far western end of 24L.

Cheers!

It's transporting something (don't know what) to China via Tripoli, so where it's going to rotate is anyone's guess.

I'm banking on 1200. Operationally it makes sense. 1600 isn't that much of a problem, although the sun will be right down the middle of 24L at that time (assuming against all odds it is out). Question is, where is going to be the best spot? Too bad we're spoilt for choice sometimes.

I'm still thinking near the triangle to see it rotate.

Surely they will send it at 12 as opposed to 11 - would make sense for it to be the last off 24L.
