Got A New Camera

Sat Oct 28, 2006 5:58 am

I finally joined the digital SLR world and bought a used canon 300d. I love it, but I am a novice when it comes to the digital slr's so if anyone has any pointers, I'd appreciate any advice you want to give. I have a 35-80 lens and a 75-300 lens so I have a good variance I think. Thanks for your help!

My condolences  devil

Just joking. Yeah, I agree with Ian. Go out there and shoot, shoot, shoot. A couple of books on photography wouldn't be a bad thing either.

I would suggest that for practice, go out and photograph cars, birds or any other fast moving objects to get your panning skills down. It has been suggested by others to shoot using Aperture Priority (A-mode) or Shutter Priority (S-mode) modes. People here have also pointed out that when using the A-mode, use an f-stop between f/8.0 or f/10.0 and use an Exposure Compensation of -0.3 EV for sunny days and maybe a 0.0 or +0.3 for cloudy days. You can do further adjustments when you post-process your photos in your favorite software.

My  twocents  worth.

Thanks for the help. I've used digital SLR's before and I even have a few shots in the database from it, but it was a friends so I never used it on a consitent basis. Hopefully I'll get a handle on it and be able to upload some shots.

Good luck. I think the folks here can help you much more once you've managed to get some more experience and have more detailed questions about specific situations.

I bought a new 350D and a 75-300 USM a year or two ago and never really did anything with them. I snapped a few photos of planes but once I realized that they had zero chance of getting added I blew it off and put it away. Hopefully you'll have much better luck than I did. You already have some images accepted so you're obviously doing something right.

Ok, I have jaggies around the leading edge of the wing and for some reason it just doesn't look right. Feel free to lay into it and give me some constructive criticism. Thanks.

More careful sharpening, less compression, fix the link.

Just keep practising. Go out in the garden, look for stuff around the house. Anything can create a good picture!

What ISO are you using? Try to keep it as low as possible to reduce noise.

The 'link' is still just going to http://photobucket.com/. I'm pretty sure that's not intentional. Also, can you explain what you did with the post-processing? Maybe you can provide the original photo in addition to your modified version and then list what you used for your post-processing workflow.

SATX, i'll see what I can do with the link. I am at work right now and I don't have my laptop with me, but if I get a chance tonight, I will fix it. My post processing consists of the smart photo fix, then messing with the unsharpen mask which I still have problems with. When I get home, I will look at my settings and relay them on to you. Thanks for the pointers so far though.

I got my 300D back in April and I had a good read of the manual, you learn alot about the camera from that and it helps you become acquainted with all its different functions.

And as Daleaholic has said, go out in the garden or something and get practising with the camera. Every little bit of experiance helps.

Good luck!

Read the manual and get an easy to read book on the basics of digital photography. Good luck!  cheerful

Anyone? Processing included resizing, then cropping, then unsharpen mask with 2.0 radius, 100 strength, and 2 clipping

Make sure when cropping that you set your ratio to 3:2 or 4:3.
For sharpening I find settings of 500, 0.2, 0 work the best. For me anyways.
I would say you have the right idea about framing your shots but need some serious work with your processing.
Find yourself a workflow, say the one on the upload page and you can always adjust it to your liking.
Good luck,

Ivan

It sure looks better but I would frame it more to the left to have an equal distance to the edge from the nose and the horizontal stab on the other side, instead of centering the fuselage.
