Update: SAT Photography

Wed Jan 03, 2007 6:43 am

After a meeting today with the Aviation Director, the Chief of Police, and the Aiport Manager, we've come up with an interim as well as a long term solution for photography at SAT.

Interim:
Call (210) 207-3433. Ask for a Shift Supervisor and let them know where you'll be spotting.
The Chief of Police will notify the police supervisors to be sensitive to photographers.

Long-term:
We've discussed three areas that will possibly be designated as official observation areas with posted signs.
1) Long-term garage.
2) Area by Sandau and 281 intersection for 12R approach.
3) Area by NE Entrance Rd and Bitters intersection for 3 departures.

The Chief of Police also suggested initiating an ID badge program.

Airport administration is verrry supportive of aviation photography. All three gentlemen were throwing out suggestions for areas and different ideas as to the best way to keep track of who's there without impeding on our photography. If any of you have ANY problems at SAT, a quick call or email to notify the airport admin goes a long way here.

Now THAT is how to go about making your local airport more spotter-friendly. Way to go Mike!

Way to go Mike. That is definitely the way to handle these kinds of situations. I myself asked the airport manager (via e-mail) here at Grand Junction's Walker Field about taking photos around the airport. He said that there is no problem with it as long as I call the manager's office prior to going out.

Can these guys call Massport @ Logan? Sounds like a great plan! I'd like to ask, but I'm afraid of a definitive no...

Nice going Mike, glad to hear that they are receptive to hearing your ideas down there in San Antonio, and doing something about it. I knew I liked that city!  Wink Keep up the great work.

I will soon be in Dallas for a few months so I'll surely swing down to SAT sometime in the near future...

Thanks for all the kind words guys. I think SAT is starting to get some of the attention it deserves, and I can't wait to see more spotters out there!  Smile

Does SAT have any "unusual" traffic? I'd think it would just get AA, DL, WN, CO, UA and NW............any others ??

Anything from Mexico?

F9 has daily flights to SAT.

Daily AM (B737) and MX (A320), and also Aeroliteral brings a E-145.

San Antonio Aerospace brings in some unique planes for maintenance. Examples: Saudi Royal MD-11, Qatar Royal 747SP, Transaero 747s, just today I saw a VIP Swiss DC-8 (HB-IGH), and there's also a LH A300 here right now. SAA also does a great deal of maintenance for UPS.

Continental brings a 753 every once in a while.

Omega Tanker is also based in SAT, so they bring their 707s in fairly often.

UPS brings 757s and DC-8s in daily and FX brings DC-10s, A300/10s, and 727s.

SAT isn't as bad as you'd imagine... I think you just have to know how to play the airport. haha

I spent an hour there and happened to catch a C-17.

I have also seen Black Hawks shoot approaches. Along with various other military traffic.

I have seen duller, more boring airports. I was in the area visting family and it was worth my time stopping by for a few.
