KLAS, Ksan Or Ksna?

Tue Feb 06, 2007 7:38 pm

Hello

I am over to LAX in mid April for some 5days or so .... , as I actually know where to spot in LAX and so on I thought it might be a good idea to fly over to another spottinglocation where I can get some smaller stuff.
KLAS, KSAN or KSNA came to my mind as Its only around a hour flight or even less ....

What do you guys would do? I probably wont have any car or ladder, so it is important that there are spots which I can shoot at wihtout a ladder .... , and of course I like a/cs on ground rather than in air.

Is anyone familiar with the mentioned airports, any help appreciated .... or does anyone have another airport which offers excellent spots with some nice traffic , not more far away than 2 hrs on plane ...

Hello Robin,

Well, first off I should admit I'm a SAN partisan but hopefully I'll make a compelling argument as to why you should go there if you're interested in photographing smaller aircraft. I believe that SAN sees more small aircraft than LAS and is busier than SNA, which sees very similar traffic. SAN also has the advantage of having only a single runway. Once you're at the spotting location on Harbor Dr., you don't need to worry about missing any of the action. The drawback is that you will have trouble shooting over the chain-link fence, so it might be best to contact one of the local spotters. I'm sure someone would let you stand on the bed of their pick-up truck. Here is a selection of what you can expect to see at SAN.

Good luck!

Of those there choices I would go, LAS, SNA, SAN

If you drive from LA to Vegas you can also hit MHV and VCV, along with a few other hidden treats.

But then again LAS is the second busiest field in the U.S. for business jets. We spot many different locations but the official viewing area is best for shots of jets in the flair before touchdown.

There is also North L.V. for tour operators and small GA aircraft. I've never spotted Henderson Exec but it is primarally a bizjet and GA field.

I have a spotting platform in my truck and it's no problem picking you up for a day if it's on the weekend.

WX has been near 70 degrees.

What I do is sit on top of the green utility box there at the parking lot... it more than enough to clear the fence, and I have 13 of my 14 A.net shots from that location-

It's a real good location...

...of course, if Matt Lyons is there, then by all means, ask to shoot on his truck. I've never been down at SAN at the same time he has, however, so I've never had the oppurtunity to ask.

Alex,

I typically only let screeners shoot from my truck. Helps to get more photos accepted.

OK, no problem! Big grin I understand your rationale, plus my spot on the electric box does fine for me, so it won't be a problem if we're both at the airport at the same time!

As I am not a screener I have to pass ....

Looks like I either head for LAS and/or SAN - SNA is off then. It seems photography is hasslefree at those places.

I ve got 1 more question ... : Is the following style possibel without truck or ladder ?

We shot dawn to dusk and the police are the coolest ever. We had a pilot stop by and ask us about airliners.net. We was amazed at what we were doing and we told him to come by any weekend.

Robin and Juan..come up anytime. We love having new people come to town and the more the merrier!!

That guy on the green ladder is the infamous Jason "sunshine" Whitebird. Good friend of ours living part-time in Vegas. The man is a spotting monster!!!

As for SNA, are there any hassles there, if up on the garage or one of the roads near 405?

As you can tell from Dbudd's shot, LAS (at least the official location) is impossible without a truck and a ladder. The fence there is high. The other way to do it is to stand on top of a tall vehicle like an SUV or minivan.

The green electrical box at SAN that San747 mentions is probably your best bet. There's another one that I usually use, but it's not as high and I have a little plastic stool I stand on that gets me high enough. You can also shoot approaches from ground level, but you'll only have sky in the background.

Not sure how do 'thru the fence' would be from the LAS viewing park????? Planes are going by at what, 140mph or so? I would think you would need to pan to get a sharp shot....

The timing of a through the holes shot would be tough. Unless you're really good I would expect most would be cut off either in front or back. Also, it would only work with a point and shoot camera, the lens on a DSLR is too big to fit through the holes.

Taking shots through the fence can be possible. The link I have posted is from a shot taken through the fence. We were sharing a ladder so I decided to see if I could shot through the holes and it seemed to work fine, you just have to time it properly.

The guys here in Vegas kid me because I can get photos thru the fence as LASOctoberB6 suggests. We call it 'Thru the fence photography" and it really does work. It's not that hard but you do have to pratice and have a fast shutter speed.

Here is one of my better shots. Notice the angle is lower ..

https://www.airliners.net/open.file/1156046/L/

I do have a set-up in my truck for getting over the fence but sometimes I loan out my ladder to close friends and I'm forced to shoot from the ground. I can get great shots thru the fence as my smaller lens only has a 62mm filter size and it lines up very nicely! My other lens is 67mm and would not work. Sometimes a dark shadow will appear in the corners if I've caught the wire but I won't use these pics!!

I usually lead the aircraft a little bit and pan with it for a fraction of a second before snappin' the shutter!! You can pick your background this way and allow the aircraft to fly to you and it makes for a better composed photo.

Dave Budd truly is the master of "through the fence photography"!! I don't know how he does it. When I shoot with him I am just amazed at the shots he gets between the fence wire. His example shot is a perfect example of it. My lens does not fit anyway, even if it did, I don't think I could do it the way he does. We have a great time here at LAS shooting.

Hi Guy's

I will be heading to LAS (plus many other places from TUS-LAX ) next month and wondered where to take shots from to get those classic Vegas shots with the famous hotels of the stip in the background. Can anyone point me in the right direction? Also, is there a photography/spotter website which gives info regarding this airport or TUS/PHX/LAX?
Any help most appreciated, and I look forward to bumping into some of you guy's!

Those shots with the casino back drops are aircraft departing rwy 01R. That is the northernly departure when the wind is blowing from the northeast. That only happens a few times a month as the wind has to be strong and that usually comes with cold winter storms. If you come at the right time we go up into the general Public parking garages and walk over and shoot from the employee side which faces the strip.

Give me an email and we will see about hooking up. I usually have time during the week and I usually shoot all day during the weekend!!

HSH / KHND

Quoting wikipedia:
Although most U.S. airports use the same three-letter location identifier for the FAA and IATA, Henderson Executive Airport is assigned HND by the FAA and HSH by the IATA (which assigned HND to Haneda Airport in Tokyo, Japan). The airport's ICAO identifier is KHND

I was out in SAN in summer of 2005, unfortunately my camera was a 2 megapixel w/ no zoom - I can't wait to go back to SAN again, hopefully sometime soon

One question for the SAN locals, those (I think I remember two?) parking garages right under the approach path, are you allowed to take pictures from those? I don't remember seeing any photos from SAN that might be from there, so I'm guessing...no?

Quoting FlightShadow (Reply 36):
One question for the SAN locals, those (I think I remember two?) parking garages right under the approach path, are you allowed to take pictures from those? I don't remember seeing any photos from SAN that might be from there, so I'm guessing...no?

No, plus you gotta pay to use them... those garages are only a good vantage point for arrivals anyway, lightpoles make shots of departures difficult...
Scotty doesn't know...
