Lens Choice - Please Help!

Fri May 18, 2007 11:42 pm

Hi folks,

A while back, I ditched my Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L USM IS, primarily due to the slightly softness when wide open and beyond 300mm. The money went towards a Canon 1D MkII N which I use with a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS USM which is pin sharp and I love it.

Sadly, I miss the ability to get in just that bit closer so I'm considering a primary lens and have been looking at the following two:

1) Canon EF 300mm f/4.0L USM IS
2) Canon EF 400mm f/5.6L USM

Whilst I would love to go the whole hog and feast on a 500mm f4, sadly, I have other things in life which I would sooner spend £4,000 on!

So, between 1 & 2 above, obviously I'll get closer with 2, but 1 comes with IS and is the newer lens.

Can anyone offer first hand experience or opinion .... I'd love to hear it! Also, what's the likelihood Canon might revamp the 400mm in the near future and stick IS on that?

As always, many thanks folks for any help ....  wave

I was looking at the same options not long ago. I couldn't bring myself to buy the 400mm because it did not have IS. For me that is too much length without any stabilization. I wound up with the 300 f/4 and love it. It is very sharp and has good color and bokeh. It lacks a little contrast for me, but that is easily fixed in photoshop. The focusing speed is average and the IS is louder than I expected. All in all the lens is worth the money spent. Here are a couple in the queue right now.
