Canon EOS30D, Nikon D80, Or What?

Tue Jun 19, 2007 6:15 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm currently considering the purchase of a new DSLR camera - and my primary "cameras of interest" are either the Canon EOS 30D or Nikon's D80.

I currently use a Canon EOS 300D, so the 30D would have the advantage of me being able to use my existing lenses, whereas I'd have to buy new equipment for the Nikon - but that one has a higher resolution.

Which one is better on the technical side? Is there anything that one can do that the other cannot? Or is there any other camera that you'd recommend that I should take a look at (no need to tell me that I should get the EOS 5D or 1D-Mark II - that's way above what I'm willing to spend)?

Smile - it confuses people!

Either one will work just fine. I migrated up from the 300D to the 30D, as I too had an investment in lenses. Since I had L glass, I did not consider moving to Nikon. I am very happy with the 30D. I've had it since December and already have over 20K images from it. Any issues I've had with images is purely photographer induced!  Smile

Some people like the ergonomics of the Nikon series better than the Canon series, so my advice would be to go to a camera store and handle both for a while. The 30D does much better handling low light/high ISO settings, whereas I have seen people with the Nikon complain about high noise issues at these settings, but if most of your shooting is outdoor/aircraft spotting, it probably won't be an issue.

Bottom line: I'm sure whatever choice you make you'll be happy with.

I agree with Wannabe on both points - go try both out and see which one works for you. If there's no real difference, or if you have a huge investment in glass, then stick with Canon (and that's coming from a guy who shoots Nikon!).

I just purchased and received the D80 with a Tamron 28-80 and a Nikkor 70-300 G and I'm very pleased. To go with what Wannabe was saying, I do find the ergonomics of the Nikon setup to be much more pleasing than on the Canons. The resolution is great and so far I've got no complaints about it. Go to the store and get a feel for one!
Promise me you'll always leave the ground
