Best Airports In The World For Spotting Wide-body

Tue Dec 04, 2007 1:00 am

Which airports in the world have the best access and best spotting locations for wide-body airplanes?

I heard on these forums that JFK is very good.
There are a ton of KLM pictures from AMS on A.net, so apparently AMS is good too.

Any other ones?

Believe it or not, Memphis has a very high ratio of widebodies to narrowbodies. Sure, most are FedEx DC-10s, MD-10s, MD-11s, A300s and A310s (and coming up, 777s), but there's a whole bunch of them. Throw in some UPS heavies and the daily Northwest A330, and you can bag probably 60-70 widebodies a day if not more. There are some good spots to catch the action there, too.

As a born and bred Mancunian I have to stand up for my local airport MAN, Jawed.

We may not have the volume or variety of wide bodied aircraft compared to other places mentioned above, but when they are around we are fortunate to be able to get very close:

Also the orientation of the runways is perfect for the lighting for much of the time - which is a real bonus. Now, getting the sun to actually shine here is a different kettle of fish  wink .

All the best.

Sorry Paul. I would have to go for LAX, there are lots of locations around the airfield and a great variety of traffic as well.

Sheer number of widebodies with the best spots from which to view/photograph? I'd probably say NRT or HND. Variety of widebodies with the best spots? NRT, AMS, LAX and FRA are definately up there. THE best spots from which to view/photograph maybe a more limited selection? Definately MAN. Number and variety of widebodies but with limited viewing/photography opportunities? I'd say LHR and CDG.

My experience at NRT was great, tons of 747s all around, and a great observation area (airside) that has a great view of the flightline.
