Photoshop CS + Camera Raw

Sun Dec 23, 2007 1:38 pm

I use Photoshop CS and shoot with a 400D. Has anyone with a similar set up managed to upgrade their copy of Photoshop CS to enable it to read CR2 files from the 400D or similar body?

I use CS2 and have no problem with the CR2 files from my 400D

Have you downloaded the latest camera RAW plugin?

Officially, Adobe doesn't support the 400D in Photoshop CS. What I was getting at was if there are any ways around it - either to trick the software, find a suitable Camera Raw plugin, or something third party.

As mic said, you have to download and install the latest camera RAW plugin.

Download it from Adobe's website, and copy the file to the respective folder, as instructed. Then Photoshop can read your 400D RAWs.

If you have any problems with the update, send me a message.

Cheers
Stefan

Edit: sorry, I did not see you are using CS - I was assuming CS2. Not sure if there is a respective upgrade for CS.

Usually not - Adobe has made it very clear that they don't support "older" versions of their products. I have CS2 and had to upgrade to CS3 as the newest version of ACR won't work with CS2, and the CS2 version of ACR won't open D3 or D300 files.

Another option for you is to buy Lightroom. It's cheaper than PS, opens most of the newer file formats, and you can use it for initial RAW conversion then tweak the files in JPG or TIFF format in PS CS.

Before I upgraded to the latest version, I was using Adobe's free DNG converter to convert my D200 RAW files to .DNG files that CS could then open. It's a one-time process to convert a whole folder of RAW files to .DNGs.

See the download links on this page:
http://www.adobe.com/products/dng/

It's free. It does what you need.

That's exactly what I do, and it works very well if I do intial RAW conversion in LR, export in TIFF, and then sharpen in PS and convert to JPG. Since I started using that method, I've had 75% of my shots accepted.
