Lenses Cheaper In Asia/US

Sun Feb 17, 2008 9:55 pm

I am thinking about buying a Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L IS. I can get it here in the UK for £1000 new and about £800 on ebay. Would I be able to get one much cheaper in the US or Asia?

It's about $200 more expensive in the states.

I've recently bought a lens that was alot cheaper in the US. Over here for the Sigma 80-400 places like Jessops were asking £999! Out in New York, my parents bought one for £580, including tax.

Don't be misled by American shops, tax isn't included in the price. You've also got to be careful when you bring them back into the UK. Import tax is a bugger!

So you could go there for a night or two's holiday and still pay the same as in the UK!

As for import tax..Can't you just stick it in your bag and keep quiet?

Where did they get it from then?

B & H photographic..... The mecca of all photo shops. Every camera enthusiast should make the pilgrimage to New York at least once in a lfetime and pay homage at the shrine that is B&H.

I plan to take a visit there, although from what I've heard, it's not the sort of place you can go in and browse around!

Would love to go but the airfare is more than the lens!

I have bought my 80-400 lens from the online store B&H and promptly delivered to my door half way around the world in just over a week. I did have to pay some GST on it as it was valued over $1000 when it crossed our border. It was still a bit cheaper than buying one here at the time in 2006.

Damn our dollar is weak... Pisses me off cause I'd love to go to Canada and buy a lens for cheaper than I would here. Dream lens: Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM (I have simple dreams). Cost: $1500... DAMN! Why do I have to be in college?  Wink
