LAX - Saturday 3/8 And Sunday 3/9

Tue Mar 04, 2008 5:21 pm

Hi all....

As many of you know, this Saturday, March 8 marks the first revenue flight for Delta's brand-new 777-200LR. That flight is DL110 ATL-LAX, with scheduled arrival at 10:20am. The return LAX-ATL flight is DL101, departing 11:30am. I'm heading over to LAX for a weekend of photography, and I hope to see some people while out shooting, in particular on Saturday for the new Delta plane. Who else plans to be out on either Saturday or Sunday?

Perhaps an LAX local can answer a question for me about spotting locations. I haven't been to LAX in a while, but my recollection is that Delta typically arrives and departs on the south side, making Proud Bird a good location for the 777 arrival and Imperial Hill a good location for the departure. Is that right? Also, are those spots good for most of the day this time of year?

I will be there on Saturday. You are correct with all your assumptions. The light at Imperial is still good but starting to shift to the North slowly. Sunset is much better at In n Out this time of year. Here is a shot from last weekend.

I'll be flying in on DL110 and spotting all day Saturday before heading back to ATL on Sunday morning. I'm staying at the Crowne Plaza which I hear is pretty good for spotting and photography from your room (on the correct side of the hotel, I assume) since the windows open fully. Other than that, I plan on being at In 'n' Out much of the day unless anyone has any better ideas for a guy with no wheels.

Hi.
As I am another one going to the city of angels later this month, can someone tell me if that new T7 from Delta is going to fly on a regular basis to KLAX. I wouldn't mind (at all) to see it passing in front of my camera.
BTW, Matt. That is a fantastic photo. Congratulations.
Thanks

Matt - that's a brilliant shot, one which I'd love to try to replicate for myself. About what time is sunset this time of year? Also, where exactly are you standing when you shoot that kind of shot? Again, its been a while since I have been to LAX, and I never actually did any shooting at In-N-Out. Thanks for the help. I hope to meet you this weekend.

Thanks for the comments guys. Sunset will be 5:54 Sat and 6:55 Sun (DST in effect). I was standing just to the right of the approach lights on a sidewalk. It is easy to walk from In n Out.

I've been thinking I need to get up to LAX sometime soon to do some shooting. This Saturday to get the 777 seems as good a time as any.

Depending on loads I might make it out on that flight, and might hang around the afternoon to get a shot of it departing....maybe grab some in and out. If anyone wants to meet up, lemme know!

I'd like to know this also as I am going to LAX later this month too. I looked at their ATL-LAX schedule during my stay and I do see "Boeing 777" listed, but that doesn't necessarily guarantee it's the new LR ... or does it?

Hi guys, this isn't really related, but I'm too lazy to start my own thread for such a simple question.

I've been to LAX and In N' Out countless times, but only with a point and shoot. This summer I'm bringing the DSLR and wanted know what focal lengths I need at In N' Out and the Proud Bird.

Also, Imperial Hill is around 300-500mm?

Thanks,
-Matt

I had the 70-200mm for a while and could get good shots at all LAX spots. I like having the 100-400 now though. It is easier to capture different styles of images.

Even Imperial Hill? Probably with a good amount of cropping?

It looks like I'll spend my money on the 70-200 f/4 L non IS

Thanks,

Yes, but I was using the 300D back then so heavy cropping wasn't a good idea. 737's, A320's, RJ's etc need to be cropped, but heavies will fill the frame at 200mm from Imperial.

Very good to know.

I'm on a 400D, so I have 10mp to work with, do you think the quality will be high enough for 737's and A320's etc.?

Thanks,

A 70-200 f/4 non is and a 400D will give you some nice shots from Imperial hill.
With the crop factor of the sensor in this camera it will give you an effective focal length of 112-320mm.

This was taken with a 400D and the 70-200 f/4 non is.
