My 2nd Time Out. Can This Be Improved In PP?

Hi Guys,

I went out for the second time a few weeks ago, but hadn't really bothered to play around with my photos too much.

I was going through them all, and none of them seemed to be all that great.

I was playing around with this one here, and was wondering if you guys could let me know what else needs to be done to this photo to improve it.

I understand it's nowhere near A.net standards. That's fine. I'm just looking to improve each time I go out. Hopefully I'll get to a point where I can attempt to submit a few.

Is the tail of the plane overexposed? Can this be fixed in PP? Are there any other glaring faults with this photo that I need to focus on, or work on improving my next time out?

Hi Rob,

Looks pretty good to me. I think the exposure is okay. The biggest problem might be that most of the plane is shaded, and I don't know how much you can help that with editing.

I'd definitely crop tighter if the quality does not suffer, and I also think it could stand to be sharpened a bit more. The tires and trailing edges of the flaps and ailerons look a bit soft.

I would however, like Marty above me has suggested; try a closer crop if the quality does not suffer. Get rid of the dead space on each side of the wings.

Sharpen the aircraft a *little* more, making sure you dont create any jaggies or grain and it might be worth a shot.

Like Marty and BMI have said not a bad attempt at all for a second time out.
I'm sure it took me a lot more trips before my attempts where this good.
A tighter crop and i a little more USM and i would upload.

The tighter crop is great. I really wasn't too sure on how tight to crop it. I'm lucky that the original frame was quite tight, so I don't think the photo will suffer too much from some additional cropping.

The extra sharpening will take some practice though, I think.

Obviously I'm new to photography, so my PP skills also need work. I followed a reasonably easy/basic work flow that was linked in another thread. I did apply a few stages of USM in CS3, but any more gave me jaggies. I'm guessing that any further sharpening will be need to be done to the individual parts of the photo, which will take some more practice.

Again, thank you very much for the help and comments. It was very encouraging.
