Rescreen/Prescreen Help

Wed Aug 06, 2008 6:41 am

Thanks ahead of time for any comments anyone is willing to offer. I'll try to be succinct.

My first upload attempt ever was rejected for "quality soft," as seen here:

http://www.jameswashere.net/temp/forums/20080728_p3_liftoff_080714.jpg

I took a closer look, followed a few tips from other threads to sharpen it and tweak the lighting curves, crop, and rotation. I think the result is noticeably better, but I'm concerned about awkward sharpening of the background (originally a slight motion blur), and more particularly the leveling. I referenced the bottom of the runway, which seems to roughly match the fence posts and the water tower, but is confused slightly by the top of the runway.

While I'm at it, I had a couple more I'd appreciate pre-screen comments on. These are not final edits.

Hi,

sorry to say, but I don't think the picture will make it. The motive is interesting but unfortunately the whole shot is blurry and I don't think you will be able to compensate the blurriness with sharpening.

There are some shots in your album that might have a chnace but they are too small to judge about quality and these things.

It's now oversharpened.

Care to show us the original (ex-camera) file? As it is an interesting shot, it's certainly worth trying to get it into the d/b.

Hello James.

It is certainly a nice photo, but the second attempt is definitely overprocessed. I think the first one was fairly rejected for softness - though it is an excellent attempt for a first upload.

I would be happy to have a go editing the original if you wish, for you to compare - just drop me a line. As for your others - definitely some potential in those images though, as Stefan says, it is hard to judge quality. I would like to see them at full size. Once again, if you need any pointers with the editing, I would be happy to help.

All the best.

Thank you for the input. Looks like it was good I asked before re-uploading...

I'll post the original and larger sizes of the other pictures when I get home tonight.

Even after browsing quite a few photos in the database it's hard to know when to stop processing. Seeing things like the apparent flatness of the vapor on this F-22, for example, make figuring out an ideal somewhat difficult (although I really like this raptor shot regardless).

It is compressed to fit into the post here, so you need to click on the image to open it at its full size.

All the best.

I had a quick play with it, too.

I think that with careful selective sharpening and maybe toning down the orange/red, we ought to enjoy this addition to the database soon (queue length depending Wink)

Thank you all very much for the feedback and examples. I'll have a go at it again in the next couple of days.

In the meantime, does anyone have any opinions on the other photos I linked to?

I feel like I'm high maintenance, but I was hoping I could get some opinions on my latest editing attempt. I've got two versions, the only real difference being how I adjusted the lighting. I'm more inclined towards the second one, but I'm concerned I've gotten carried away with the editing again and have just been staring at them so long I've altered my expectation of what the scene "should" look like.

Click for full size. Thanks!

And if anyone really has some time to spare, a quick opinion on the other images I linked previously would be great, too.
