Pre-Screening Thread No. 3

Tue Aug 26, 2008 5:29 am

Topic is self-explanatory.

What do you all think of this shot under the new rules?

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3280/2798367057_e5b121465c_o.jpg

Also, are crops like this acceptable now?

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3111/2688864046_03e792df06_o.jpg

Thanks,
Chris

Hi Chris,
just my opinion: Both are nice pics and if they were mine I'd upload them. If they get in, great, if not, well then upload to ATI and make money

@Othic: I'd resize it down to 1024 or 1000 pix, quality just isn't there to upload it at 1200.

Cheers,
Florian

EDIT: Forgot to ask: What about this one now, acceptable under the new creativity rules?

pre-screening makes difficult in these cases though as images are going t be discussed by more people. All I can do is say whether I personally would find them acceptable or not.

Thanks for the reply.

The first one was kind of in the shaddow of the viewing deck so I though it might be a bit too dark.

No chance for the second one then?

Is the sharpening ok? This is one of the main things I want to know as I am on a new laptop.

First time posting, have this one in the que at the moment. I have never had a picture accepted and have a crappy 4M camera. I have had many problem. My first uploads where very bad and my PS skill have improved since the start. I would be delighted to hear some view as the e-mails from the screeners tend to be brief sometimes leaving me confused. Will have new camera soon Sony A200 which hopefully will improve my sucess rate.

OK... I've finally bitten the bullet and started editing on a half decent monitor, and I've also gone back and looked at the suggested workflow and tried to adhere more strictly to it. Let's see how I did with some reprocessing:

Previously rejected for soft:

Unfortunately, this one doesn't have a chance. There's heat-haze around the wings, it's extremely grainy on the bottom, and it generally doesn't stand out from the background. On a sunny day, this photo might be salvageable.

Still needs a bit more. The tires should be almost black, unless there was a reflective object below that shot the sun up from underneath, but it doesn't look like there was.

Quoting Chamer (Reply 23):

Sorry, it just doesn't have sufficient quality. The cockpit windows look a bit bizarre (heat haze?) and the shot would also need some CW rotation anyway. I think this shot is for your personal collection only, unfortunately.

Quoting TupolevTu154 (Reply 25):
As for me:

I love the shot, but it's far too backlit. Try adding some "fill light" in photoshop or Lightroom, depending on which you use, but I think this shot may be a lost cause. It's very, very tough to get backlit shots accepted here. Mine, for example, was luck of the draw as I got a screener who liked it as much as I did.

Yes. I believe this shot was way too blurry to begin with and cannot be saved regardless of how much sharpening you apply. Personal collection, I'm afraid.

How is this for a creative shot? It was once rejected before for motive, but I gave it a new crop, and with the new rules, maybe it stands a chance.

That was my intention, to get a silhouette of the aircraft with just the burners showing.

I would have to agree with EZEIZA, in that there is so little of the plane showing. Maybe with more of the other wing it might stand a better chance.

Hi a.netters,

is it wrong to crop like that? (I thought the window frame is not much of interest but I wanted to leave it in to give it more of a "sitting in a B744" feeling.)

What do you think?

http://www.lars-tretau.de/forumbilder/DSC_5733.jpg

I guess I screwed up because after leveling I can't manage to keep the whole frame line in crop (well at least not in 3:4 ratio, and as I understand there is no way... or other more suitable formats I could use.)

Rats...second rejection on this one. First time was "quality, soft." This time just "soft."

I think I improved it greatly after the first, almost unedited submission, and now I'm unsure which parts are too soft. It looks like just a bit over the nose, and of course the background, which is natural since it's outside the depth of focus and I was panning.

Any suggestions how to improve it? Much more sharpening and it will start showing jaggies and look artificial.

Might it be worth an appeal, especially since there's only 1 picture in the DB of this aircraft actually in flight? Or maybe a screener mistook the blurry light pole behind the cockpit as part of the aircraft?

Hi,

Quoting TupolevTu154 (Reply 39):
And another one from me;

An interesting picture, but quality is really on the edge here, and in the end, by fully including the rotor blades, the helo itself becomes rather distant.

Quoting JFKTOWERFAN (Reply 40):
"creative" or crap?

Crap crop, crap light, crap quality - you choose...

Quoting Deradere (Reply 45):
is it wrong to crop like that?

Yes. For such a shot to get in, you'll need the full window frame visible, no reflections (you have a lot), much higher quality and hopefully something more interesting to see that a big wing and some blue sky  Wink .

Quoting Iamlucky13 (Reply 46):
Any suggestions how to improve it?

Not worth an appeal right now, but nothing more needed but a few minutes of careful selective sharpening being applied to the softer areas.

Quoting Braby (Reply 47):
Can i get some opinions on whether this shot would make the grade?

It won't - would be rejected for soft and contrast.

I think that was 'short and sweet' enough  devil  .
