Do You Use A Real Camera (aka. Canon)?

Wed Aug 27, 2008 10:43 am

Just wanted to know how many of you use real cameras, also known as Canons  Smile  stirthepot

I am a Canon guy all the way!! I just love their ease of use and how they seem so technologically up to date, while i find "N's" to be kind of old fashioned  Smile  Smile

No but seriously, the quality of shots you can get through the "L" glass is just absolutely mind boggling!!

Only short coming i would say is the missing weather seal on the lower end cameras, whichi think Nikons have across the board (may be wrong).

Just for the record, i use a 400D, was looking for a second body and was thinking of the 40D but now since the 50D is in the pipeline, i will wait for that.

I start this post in friendliest way possible, lets not go overboard with the insults  Smile  Smile

Sounds like the typical start of the Canon vs. nikon war or the Aibus vs. Boeing war Big grin

Yes, I use a real camera... it's called Nikon D300.

I am a Nikon guy all the way!! I just love their ease of use and how they seem so technologically up to date, while i find "C's" to be kind of old fashioned and damn ugly!

No but seriously, the quality of shots you can get through the Nikkor Pro glass is just absolutely mind boggling!!

Only short coming i would say is that there is no short comings on Nikon (may be wrong).

Just for the record, i use a D300.

What's the point of this thread, really?  banghead

Well i will share a little history about my photographic past... i started off with a Canon G-2, which was a little bulky but to be honest at that time i didnt know jack about photography so it did pretty well.

Then i wanted a little more flexibility and focal length so i bought the Canon Powershot Pro 1, i dont know if anyone used that camera, but it was one hell of a camera. Each of my shots would come out immaculate! I dont know if that piece was a absolutely brilliant one or i am a great photographer (probably the latter) but you had to see the pics it produced.

It was also one of the first "Pro-sumer" cameras with a "L" series lens. Did anyone else ever use this camera?

I think Nitin saw Vasco's "grasp for nostalgia" topic and tried to get something like that going again. It doesn't work that way though. That station has been passed. That was then, this is now. It's like seeing something funny and trying to explain it to someone else. It doesn't work most of the time, you just had to be there.

With Canon you can wat met Nikon Nie Kon.

Well, my first SLR was a Canon AE-1. I replaced it with a Canon A-1.

When Canon changed the lens mount I switched to Nikon. I'm glad I did.

I wouldn't use a Canon unless you paid me to. Born Minolta, dying Sony.  Wink We invented autofocus before Canon did, and had all of the real innovations first, like bayonet mounts, built-in metering, program exposure, wireless flash, automatic ratio flash, in-body antishake...

If for some reason the A-mount ever dies, I'd move to Nikon.

I have been a photographer long enough to know that only one things matters amongst the top marques - personal choice.
The differences between the top cameras are mere nuances and the lead is taken first by one brand then another. That is what has driven the development of the digital camera so far so rapidly.
If you are not already committed to one brand or another, go for the one that feels best, the most comfortable.

If anyone is interested, I have never felt so comfortable with a camera in my hands as when I was holding a Pentax Spotmatic F though I now use Canons.

Canon all the way! I have a 30D with the 24-105 L and the 100-400L + the cheap 18-55 and 28-105. Never considered the others as Canon was/is the best!

Well I like this thread - good for us 'younger folk' who ain't been here long enough to remember all the past 'feuding'! I'm also glad that it's stayed clean and friendly; if not a little tongue-in-cheek here and there!

I'm Canon anyaway. Came from Minolta (used to be great lenses on them!), then decided to move to either Canon or Nikon. For me Canon won.

What I disllike about Nikon is that the latest lower-end bodies have no auto-focus ability (or whatever it is) - how crap is that?!?!  stirthepot

That's the only thing I absolutely dislike about Nikon. I think they loose a lot of new customers to Canon right there. I've tried Canon for a while, then ended up using Nikon for all my photography needs. I think it's about where you get the results you want out of.

I do understand people using the cam they are most comfortable with.

I use a D300 and a D2x

ask me.....

I have used both systems. Started with Nikon years back and made the switch in 2005.
Both systems have their pro's and cons, but in the end it comes down to what your personal preference is.

One big plus is that Canon prime lenses are cheaper than their counterpart

Nikon USA
Telephoto AF-S Nikkor 600mm f/4G ED VR Autofocus Lens (Black)
Price: $9,499.95

Canon
USA
Telephoto EF 600mm f/4.0L IS Image Stabilizer USM Autofocus Lens
more info
Price: $7,600.00

We are talking 2 grand difference......

.....and Canon's IQ is mind blowing and not to forget the IS....I love to look at shots "straight out of the box" full frame at 600mm! Awesome.......

Happy to see that we can still have some fun around this forum. Ah, maybe the good ole days will return.  spin  The days when everything wasn't taken so seriously and everyone got a good laugh (or was it a good cry  rotfl  for the Canonites) out of it.

Damn, if we keep this up maybe the good times and fellowship we enjoyed in the good ole days will be enjoyed again! That would be great  bigthumbsup

I do use a real camera, and it’s called Canon.

Canons are just as much real cameras as Nikons, Sonys, Minoltas, Pentaxes (etc.), are, but in my opinion Nikon’s newly announced D90 is a tiny bit of a step down from “real”.  Silly

Stupid thread!

You refered to auto-focus as 'or whatever it is'. As if you aren't sure what auto-focus is. There isn't one Nikon DSLR that doesn't have auto-focus. Now, you won't be able to use every lens that Nikon has made with some of the lower end cameras, but that also holds true for Canon lower end cameras.

The Nikon d300 allows you to shoot with older manual lenses in aperature priority. It will calculate shutter speed for the shooter, much like film cameras. It offers more flexability for photographers with older lenses.

People have their reasons for the camera that they use, I bought a used 10D off a very talented photog who used to upload here, so thats why i chose Canon. Others may have had an old Nikon or such,

ok ok.. ive had enough of all
this camera bashing.. lets
just all agree that were
both better than Pentax
hehe Big grin

(btw i work in a camera store..it all comes down to user preference.. i use a canon 30D and getting a 50D soon and my lens lineup is nice with 17-85 (replacing with 17-55IS), 50 1.4 and 70-200 2.8IS with a 2x extender... nikon does have a couple nice cameras but i wont be jumping ship anytime soon =] )
