Poor Lighting Conditions / Overcast Days

Fri Sep 12, 2008 9:21 am

Hello everyone.

I had this rejected for 'quality' yesterday (as well as color and exposure).

Now, I think I can fix the exposure and color relatively easily, but do you think the 'quality' rejection stems from the overall poor lighting (high overcast skies) I had that day, or something else? I'm sure it's not noise that's the problem, and I was able to capture quite a lot of detail there, even if you can't see it at 1200mpx. Assuming then that the overall lighting is the problem, should I give up on uploading other similarly 'overcast' photos such as these?

As a side note, when you guys get challenging lighting/contrast conditions, such as these, how do you usually adjust the contrast, etc... do you just 'eyeball it', or rely on the photo editing software (i.e. auto levels/contrast/color in Photoshop)?

I ask because, of my rejections, the overwhelming majority are for contrast/color, and seeing as how the photos usually make it in after I've made the adjustments suggested by the screeners, I'd like to get it right the first time so I don't waste so much of their time! Thanks for any input!

Hi Dana,

It's very difficult in such conditions. Start with a good white and black point - contrast is critical especially if the weather isn't playing, play with the eyedropper tool in levels until you have something that looks right.

Your MD11 shot is tricky - the whites are clipped on the rear engine pod; and the edges all over the image have sharpening artefacts. I think the lighting is difficult to overcome; it looks harsh.

The other two have the old problem of a white / offwhite fuse against a cloudy sky; very little you can do to give the image punch.

Yeah... I toned down the exposure a bit, and am thinking about re-submitting... as for sharpening artifacts, I didn't notice that... it's hard to tell if it's because of over-sharpening or because of the reduced size of the file... you can see a full-size crop below, where I did apply a light USM, but I don't see the sharpening here as too harsh.

Given that the original size of the file is about 3200mpx, maybe the artifacts you see are because or the 3200 -> 1200 size reduction? If not could someone please correct me, as I don't think there are too many artifacts in the original, let alone the smaller size version, and I would like to know for the future so I know what to look for.

Sharpening notwithstanding, I'm still not sure whether the poor contrast/lighting can be overcome...

Why not re-size to 1024 or perhaps even 1000 pixels? Might help take care of the quality rejection.

Hi Dana,

The MD11 and 747 both have quite a bit of distortion which I think could be caused by a few different things:

1. Oversharpening
2. Heat haze
3. Shooting at maximum zoom
4. Cropping too severely

My impression is that there is more here than just oversharpening, and I believe that any of reasons 2-4 would cause a 'quality' rejection. Depending on what your original looks like these may not be possible to overcome.

I do not see the same issues on the Air China. It looks much cleaner, so you should have a better chance with it.
