Pre-Screening Thread No. 5

What kind of camera do you use? My guess is a point&shoot and it seems to limit the outcome pretty much. All pictures have serious quality issues, particularly with grain and over exposure.
1st is very grainy, blurry and unlevel.
2nd is overexposed with blown whites, very soft and needs a closer crop
3rd looks weird, colours, grainy, over exposed (you can hardly read legacy in the whites) and very soft

And the rejected one was correctly rejected I'm afraid. It's blurry, grainy, unlevel (or someone has hit that light post), contrast etc. It seems it was a cloudy day in this pic and your camera is not up to the task.

If you have a DSLR you need to read the manual, and read in on the internet on issues like shutter times, exposures and ISO settings. Also, check images in this database to see what is accepted and not, and it's also a good idea to look through the Post Screening thread where we discuss rejections, and you can see some photos that appear to be great quality but for one reason or other was rejected.

No offense was taken.

Your Dreamlifter shots for example. They're all way too small. The minimum size for photos here is 1000 pixels-wide. They're also unlevel. The subject is also uncentered. Your second batch, quality wise, shows promise. However generally photos accepted here are one of two size ratios: 3-by-4 or 3-by-2.

My point is there are many resources to help you, including the IGRR I posted above as well as the information on the upload page, https://www.airliners.net/addphotos/. Again, look at the photos in the database to get an idea of what is acceptable.

As with Sjmurphy, until you meet the basic rudimentary requirements there isn't much else I can offer you in terms of advice.

About your photos:
1st one will never get accepted since the wheels are blocked
2nd one, better quality but wrong ratio
3rd one is cool since you have 2 of these ugly buggers in one pic Big grin

But, it's blurry and very soft on top of that.

I think the motive would work very well, but the exposure (or lack thereof) hurts the shot. This may have been an interesting shot to do an HDR merge on. Maybe for next time?

Here are a couple I have in the queue that I'm unsure about. I'm in one of those phases where I haven't spotted in a long time and am aching to upload more shots.

All the images (in both posts) are way too blurry, and many have quality issues. They are also the wrong size. You must be between 3:2 and 4:3 aspect ratios (for an image at 1024 pixels across, like yours are, the height must be between 683 and 768 pixels.

Antix87, love the lot, only things I have is that the whites on Air India are borderline, but it is a very white livery, other than that it's a great shot. BA has some jaggies in the tail logo and the border between blue and white on the fuselage as well. L'avion gould possibly use very little USM, not sure about it thogh, it's a fine shot IMO. NWA, nothing to say from my side.

Appreciate a comment on this one. I haven't uploaded previously because the sun was at an awful angle and the photo took a lot of "lightening". I also felt it was too low in the frame but after seeing some recent uploads figured maybe I am being too hard on myself.

Expert help appreciated.

In other words, no, they won't get accepted. Given the amount of severe compression on all three (assuming these are originals straight off the memory card), it is highly unlikely that they are salvageable.

They look a tad oversharpened to me. I think they'd look better cropped 3x2 rather than 4x3 but that's a personal preference.

Please look at other images in the galleries before asking about images like this. Your pictures, as FlyNavy said, are very compressed. In addition, the colors and contrast look completely fake.

What camera are you using? Do you have any certain settings on that should not be? Your camera should be doing absolutely ZERO processing on the images it takes (no in-camera sharpening, no special color settings or saturation compensation, etc). What the camera sees should be exactly what you start with on your computer when you go to edit.

Really? It's that tough to scroll up and read the replies to your posts?

All your shots have had questionable quality and post-processing leaves a lot to be desired. Your camera should be ok, in theory, but your software (the Corel Paint Shop) will never be good enough. You need something more inclusive like Photoshop.

As of right now, your photos just won't be good enough. Compare what you've done with the recently accepted shots in the database. Can you honestly say you feel your images are of the same quality??

Part of the game we play here is knowing when to give up on a shot you royally screw up. I've taken many shots only find out later I screwed up a camera setting. You can polish a turd all day long, but in the end, it's still a turd. You have to know when to let go.

Your shots are not Airliners material (yet). Period.

I don't think he said that. What he meant is that you obviously need to devote more time to the entire process. It seems to me that you're in a hurry (maybe desperate?) to get a photo accepted here. Don't make the same mistake a lot of first timers do. Without proper pre-screening, you'll end up with a bunch of rejected photos, a hurt morale and overall frustration. What Chris has stated here is true, and the sooner you accept it, the easier it will be for you to improve.

For what its worth, let me add to what everyone's already said. Understand your camera thoroughly, and understand what is required to get a photo accepted here. Then spend some time with learning the basics of Photoshop, and then have a go at editing your photos. In the meantime, if getting your photos onto a database is what matters to you, then on the side, you can always upload to myaviation.net.

I wouldnt upload either, unless you want rejections.

The quality is just not there, plus its grainy, unlevel, etc etc.

Also another way to have better quality is to reduce the size of the picture to as much as you can for this site, 1024x683.

No, neither should be uploaded, and it's BECAUSE you used the same settings.

I edited the Cypria image, since Deaphen edited the other. Here is my attempt:

Even with Photoshop, this image was very, very difficult to save. If I had had the original, it may have been better, but the point is, look at the differences between yours and mine.

Mine is cropped much closer, to show only the aircraft. I reduced a lot of the grain in the image, so it looks cleaner. I sharpened the image to make it crisper.

Now, even with ALL the things I did, it STILL WOULD NOT BE ACCEPTED. It still has some soft spots, there is still quite a bit of grain, and the general quality is not good.

Here is the advice we've all given you, put into ONE PARAGRAPH.

Stop posting imaged you have already taken. We've established beyond ANY doubt that they are not good enough. Go out to your airport, and start all over. Learn how to use your camera to its full potential, play around with settings, and do not use Digital Zoom (which it looks like you did on the Malaysia shot). Only shoot on sunny days until you learn how to compose and edit shots. When you have a shot that you think is of the same quality as those on this website, then come back and ask if it's any good. And remember, you have to be patient. Your first good shot might come once we're using Pre-Screening thread number 16, but believe me, once you get to that point, you'll be happy you waited because you won't be discouraged by an entire string of rejections. Again, stop posting images you've already taken in the past.

Sorry to be so harsh, but you seem to refuse to want to listen to us. If you come for advice, you must be ready to accept criticism as well.
