Post One Of Your Best From 2008....

Thu Dec 04, 2008 11:43 pm

Since we are in the waning days of 2008, I thought it would
interesting to see ONE from your collection of 2008 ANET pictures
that defined the year for you! A explanation why alongside it would be
nice too.

Here is my picture for 2008. I doubt I can top this one in what is
left this year. I chose this because of the level of detail seen on
the Commander while in-flight and flying by at a steady clip. I felt
it was the rare conjunction of weather, opportunity, location, equipment
and dumb luck.

Here is my submission:

https://www.airliners.net/open.file/1429842/L/

(note: the photoid XXXX syntax stalls the thread starting hence I am submitting the URL above. Not sure if this only happens to the thread starter or everyone. I guess the next person posting here can tell us)

I figured with the way the site is running right now, uploading and screening for the rest of the year is a crap shoot.

HAHA! With the way photo searches are going, uploading shots to this thread may be a crap shoot! I'd love to add a thumbnail here, but apparently I have no photos in the database. The advertisements still work ok though. I got a "No Images Found" reply, but the circuit city ad got me to accidentally click on it when I didn't want to, so I suppose that is almost as good.

Well, even though it is only December, I think this one has secured the number one spot for me this year. My most popular shot on this website, and it earned a couple spots on the front page which has been a long-time goal.  Smile

This aircraft made a surprise unannounced appearance at the 2008 Miramar Airshow. I was so bummed that day because the weather was crap (as usual) for the show and I was pretty sure I was going to come home empty handed with no "winners". During the break between the day and night shows I walked around to shoot some of the statics and then grabbed some food. As I was in the process of putting my camera in my bag for a while, I caught this thing in the corner of my eye and rushed into position in just enough time to snap the shot. It definitely brightened my day.  Big grin

This one:

https://www.airliners.net/photo/Air-B...in-(LTU/Airbus-A330-322/1342438/L/

I sold it to the airline for advertising, and it's my favorite angle on my favorite aircraft in a great livery, and the first time I had ramp access at JFK.

My most memorable shot from 2008 would be this one:

It was great experience attending their concert in Mumbai; and the very next day I caught this beauty departing! What more can a rock and aviation enthusiast ask for?  Wink

I have too many from this year, it's not been a bad one!! I've had rides on some classic aircraft including DC-3's and DH.89 Dragon Rapides and been on some great fligths to the Caribbean and Europe, and not finished yet as I'm flying up to northern Finland to see the northern lights and Santa next week!! If I had to choose only one, it would probably have to be the photo taken from the Dragon Rapide as we climbed out from runway 33 at Blackpool, passing over the coastline; with my view on appoach over Jolly Beach in to Antigua a very close second:

Although I agree it is still a bit early to look back on 2008, my best photography-moment was when I was at Wittmundhafen for the celebration of the Phantom II (I was also "50" at that time  Smile ...). Very pleased to witness all 3 special c/s, but since I can only choose one, this is it for me:

I've had a good innings with regards to hits this year, and this was far from being my highest hitter. Having said that I just love this shot for the colours and the way it's framed. I was really glad I got up early this freezing Autumn morning, it was completely worth it!

The photo that sticks out for me is this one, not because it is one of my best technically, but because I was lucky to have the chance to get the view of my home airport:

I get very little opportunity to get inside an airliner, but on this sole trip for me in '08 the dreadful weather that morning cleared just enough to allow this shot underneath the cloud base, and the infrequent 05L departure, turning south, allowed this rarer vantage point. It looked like a potential 'no-hoper' straight out of the camera, so I was pleased with the result all things considered.

I've made some really nice shots (IMHO) this year, but I like my latest one a lot.
It's a formation of 2 RAF Chinooks who came in for a fuelstop. The sun was beginning to show from behind the cloudlayer just as they took off. They hovered above the RWY 23 threshold for a bit before flying down the runway.

My best aviation experience this year was getting rolled, looped and spinned in a Yak-52. I already posted a photo from that flight in a similar thread, though.

So I'll post what I think has been my very first '#1 of last 24/48 hours', although I'm not even totally sure it was #1 - is there a way to find out?

That's one of my best for this year - nice light, nice angle. I got about 4 or 5 shots of that plane, all were good - but this was the better one.

It was my second shot of the plane this year, I also snapped this one:

https://www.airliners.net/photo/Jetst...Airways/Airbus-A330-202/1343990/L/

My most popular for the year was a boring side on (in my opinion) A380 shot, but it got heaps of views. Sometimes the stats are hard to explain..  Wink

Questions, If I may.

How much did you make off of Air Berlin, if you don't mind me asking? Nice picture, I am assuming it was more than a few bucks.

Second, how did you get ramp acsess at JFK. Know someone internally? My friend works on air side at YWG and I can't get through. ??

Thanks, and great picture. The A330 is truely an amazing aircraft.

I set out at the beginning of the year with the goal of attending a lot more airshows and coming home with more keepers. So in preparation for that I sold my 80-400 VR in favor of a Nikon 300 F4 AF-S and a 1.4x converter. With that I hit the road, gathered as many friends as i could find and hit up pretty much every airshow within driving distance and had a blast, and came home with a few keepers, just like I wanted.

I'd been trying to get a shot like this since my days flying UK to Ghana back on the Ghana Airways DC-10's in the late ninetees. Finally some clear weather, and an on time departure from LHR allowed sunset to coincide with the sand dunes below.

Cheers, Paul

Perfect photography day (clear, crisp winter's day - a really rare combination for Heathrow!) and a stunning plane.

My favourite for the year, so far anyway  Smile
I was simply using Bigma to admire the scene after everyone else seemed to have put their cameras down. Realised that it was a good angle and rattled a few off, only one of which was really sharp

Quoting Scottieprecord (Reply 44):
holding the 100-400 out the cockpit of a Bell 47 with all of Airventure to see around me

Just curious - was that accessable to anyone (like a tour) or did you specially arrange that?
