I just recently stepped into the digital world by picking up a used 20D and am looking for suggestions on what settings to use. Any help would be appreciated.

I have had good service for four years with mine. The bulk of my images are taken with ISO 200, maximum file size, and using the shutter priority mode. I also set the correct lighting conditions and use center-weighted autofocus. Enjoy it.

Great camera! I use it professionally as a sports photographer. Personally, I use Av and Manual a lot within the ISO 200-800 range depending on the lighting conditions. Lenses are important...I've used the Canon 100-400 L series, 70-200 2.8 L-series and last weekend I picked up the Canon 50mm 1.8 EF II to shoot basketball.

Thanks for the advice so far. I just starting out with digital but have done film since the 80s. My main problem seems to be with soft pictures and digital noise. Will using sharper image in the parameters help or should I just try to use software to sharpen? I do not have the budget for the L sreies lenses and am having to make due with 75-300 non IS zoom from Canon. Thanks for all the help and Fergul I will also search but I was in a terrible hurry as I want shoot some b4 work today. F4wso do shoot at MSP by the way? I work there as a fueler.

Digital is a whole different animal compared to film and in most cases the cameras are designed by engineers who aren't photographers! You really need to learn about the beast. There is a great instructional DVD on the 20D...can't think of the name of it...just go to eBay and type in Canon EOS 20D DVD. Very helpful in understanding the world of digital and the 20D in particular.

I avoid messing with the parameters. Some of your problem may be ISO selection and dealing with the damnable 9-point focus...keep it to the center focus point and you should be okay for most photography.

you got yourself a fine piece of equipment. I bought mine back in 2004 and still shooting with it (also it is only a back up these days) with the right lens, image quality is stunning to say the least. The 40 and 50D may be a bit nicer but for a beginner it is more than enough.
I did operate mine mostly in A priority, shot RAW images, sharpening, contrast etc was set to 0 value. Everything else was done in PS later on.
Since you will be rather close to the subjects I am sure your lens will just do fine for the moment.
Post some pictures and we'll go from there. I am sure questions will pop up....

OK No worries!
Still have my 20D, its hardly used these days as my 1D is the main one.
To Start, Aperture Priority at f8, ISO as low as possible. and let the camera do the rest. You can worry about the other stuff later when you get used to it.

I too own the non IS 75-300 lens. I find it a great lens to start out with. I own the xsi and I think that with the practice of getting that crisp shot with a non IS lens will work out greatly once i actually do buy an IS lens (hopefully the 100-400) sometime within a decade (expensive!!!).

Yes thats what the rejection was for noise and oversharpening. Pictures prior those 2 were taken with an EOS a2e and they we got rejected for softness so i guess i got carried away.
I have yet to hear back on the resubmission on the suncountry.
