Camera Screen Protection.

Fri Jan 16, 2009 3:33 pm

One of the main reasons for my purchasing a Canon 40D was the size of the viewing screen which as we know is around 4x the size of the 20D. However I'm concerned about possible surface damge from scratches etc.
Does anyone have experience with self adhesive protective films?
Do they significantly effect the clarity of the screen?
Is there a preferable brand?
Any advice would be welcome.

Malcolm.

This film works fine on my iPod Touch. My camera does not need it - Nikon provide a removable transparent plastic cover.

Don't bother... The screen is very resistant to scratching and in any case it is in itself only a plastic cover over the actually LCD and can be popped out by inserting a sharp point at the edge - replacements are just a few dollars

Hi Malcolm,

I've just ordered an EXiM SPOC Screen Protector off Ebay for £2.99 + p&p for my 50D. Screens on Canon SLR's are very resistant to scratching; my 350D that is nearly 4 years old is pretty much scratch free after 20,000 frames. But for the money, a screen protector is worth having just in case. It's easier to replace a screen protector than the actual LCD cover on the camera (and a lot less money!). EXiM protectors don't use adhesive to stick to the LCD cover so they don't effect it and light transmission is pretty good so it won't effect the screen performance by much. They are certainly one of the best around.

Thanks Viv. I knew if I waited long enough I would learn of some advantage of being a Nikon owner.

I don't doubt your words, Andy, but I would hesitate to prod my relatively expensive purchase with a sharp instrument!

Thanks Darren I will have a look at this suggestion.
Incidentally, hovering my mouse over 'LCD' points me towards Louis Trichardt. Must be well connected!

I just keep the plastic cover on my D200 at all times unless I really want to look closely at a pic I have taken and then I just replace it after I am done.
