I'm also fairly new so I will give my 2 cents on my first impressions on this forum and site (good and bad)

-The first thing I noticed is how dead this forum is. I think people should talk about their photography a bit more, perhaps share shots that are not acceptable in the database but are interesting anyway. I did that earlier this week by sharing my "birdstrike" photo.

-For beginners, there is nothing more intimidating and discouraging than the A.net photo queue. The entire process from start to finish to beginners is screaming "YOU'RE NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR A.NET, THIS SITE IS FOR ELITIST PHOTOGRAPHERS ONLY, THANK YOU". I don't mean to insult anyone, this is just the impression i got when I first started uploading. Luckily I'm a knucklehead and it took me a little while but I started getting photos in the db

-Bugs bugs bugs.. there is an understandable reason for this right now which I understand

Now some good stuff...

-A lot of the screeners are friendly and will give you a bit input to improve

-lately.. the queue has been moving fast

-a lot of bugs seem to be in the fix

I'll tell you what has changed...

There is a post in this thread and one in the Pre & Post screening thread from NIKV69 that I agree with almost in their entirety!

Tell me when that ever happened before!!

I think we agree a lot here. It's non-av that is a whole different issue.  biggrin

All of the above mentioned made this forum more a playground / battlefield than a fun area.

What I find ironic Peter is you were guilty of most of not all of them. Not saying you were the only one but hell you used to shoot digs at me all the time flamebaiting me into wars here often when I wouldn't agree with the doom and gloom spread by yourself and a few others. Who shall remain nameless.  expressionless

Well for good reason. Though I learned a great deal from Jeff's posts critiqing pics here it was hard to get past his brash, aloof style and similiar doom and gloom propaganda we got from Peter. It was this approach that led to people feeling like CaliSam in reply 50. I felt it a little myself from not only Peter and Jeff but others both here and in person. My advice to CaliSam is to just ignore it because once you do and see the good out there you get much further along.

For me this just made me want to improve more. Strict rules I find are an incentive. When I started a few years ago I wasn't an elite photog (in fact never have been, never will be - just your average Joe-photographer), and I really don't see where this vision comes from. It's just about perfecting technique and dropping on to the right workflow. If I and the rest of the guys here (who by self-admission will probably admit they're far from elite) can do it so can everyone else. It's about trying harder, experimenting more and being dedicated, that's all. Most of us here aren't pro's.

I've only been uploading here for just under two years but have been looking at images for nearly six. I was never interested in putting my photo's up here, despite having quite a bit of experience in aviation photography. I did, however, start giving advice in the forums and there were certain people (who probably actually helped in a way) who decided to have a (big) dig simply because I had no photo's here to back up what I was saying. I stuck by my guns and eventually the constant ridicule led me to start uploading. I suppose the flack made me more determined, and having studied what the site wanted over a period of time I felt ready to take on the challenge. My first three uploads were all accepted, which made me feel great, however I then got 8 rejections in a row, which threw me a bit. Still, I modified my workflow and got used to it, and it's more-or-less the same workflow I use today, which has helped me attain a very respectable acceptance ratio. I still stand by my words - having images here proves absolutely nothing, although I have to admit it probably helps.

And in a funny kinda way, I miss the grillings dished out by certain members of this community, who seem to have simply vanished!

Hi all

Well I thought I would add my tuppence worth.

I only have one person to nominate for the best photographer. He doesn't upload to Airliners any more and the few shots he has on this site do not do his work justice.

Having met him in person, he really is a nice guy.

His shot's actually persuaded me to visit Hong Kong twice and Singapore Changi once.

Fantastic angles, great colours, great aircraft and the best photographer ever to have shot at Kai Tak.

His name is Andrew Hunt.

If you ever come across his work I am sure you will be impressed because I was.

I you see this Andrew, keep up the good work and I might see you hanging around Changi sometime (and in better weather!)

Regards

Gary Watt

Boy, I wish he still uploaded here! Sounds like one hell of a photographer!  silly

Merely stating the obvious, no need to formulate anything for many have seen it and it's far from my own opinion. Many would just avoid the forum or leave when all of that was going on. It's good to see more newcomers looking for help and improving their work and not buying into the old guard elitism.

Yes we have also seen the picking up of ones marbles and leaving the playground when the game wasn't going their way. I respect it and as we all know no gun at anyone's head to stay. There are just as many people who feel this forum and site are very fun. In the end this wasn't a treehouse or a living breathing thing. It's a website. Open to all.

So now we're all going to post some old threads? Come on, the title speaks for itself. And already some posts disappeared from this thread. Here is one reason.

Apart from that, things and people evolve, some move on some stay. A.net went through a lot of changes especially in the last two years and so its standards have changed.

Vasco, Tim, it surely was nice during these days but it's just normal that with expansion comes less intimacy. It's just not possible to still know each and everyone contributing to the site. To wallow in nostalgia won't bring us forward though.
I believe this forum can still be a very nice place but each and everyone has to contribute to make the most out of it; oldies as well as newbies!

Cheers,

Great threads, but they will be closed or terrificly mutilated within about 10 replies nowadays. I'm not bashing the mods, the question is people today simply doesn't know how to take criticism or just has a different sense of humour.
And it happens here and in the supermarket queue, you can see it everyday.

BTW, and talking about great funny threads, I now remember one about a farting Airbus. I was literally laughing about one hour with it. It was deleted because things were turning into the 'bad taste' side, but it was something hilarious.

Wow, there have been some great retro-threads dragged up in this thread. Nice work. It's fair to say that this forum has seen some very entertaining posts pop up over the years, moreso when the site was in its infancy and it was a more tightly knit community. That is not to disrespect what airliners.net has become, I think we all recognise growth was inevitable as the digital monster swept the globe, processing lab by processing lab! More people taking photos, more people wanting to upload and more people wanting answers on rejections.... I think it became a little overwhelming.

The growing queue and pressure to keep it down hampers the screeners being able to troll the forum as they once did offering up good advice on rejected images or shots users were considering uploading. A faithful group have taken up the challenge and have assisted many a new photographer get their first shot accepted.... this is to be commended!

But where has the fun gone? Well perhaps the jokes, jibs and mateship has been taken elsewhere? After all, the social networking sites are pretty popular these days! Another item of note is the departure of some of the more social photographers from the forums for various reasons. I'm sure some still troll, like me, and perhaps they may just come out of the woodwork to share a little more humour with us all once again.

And, in closing I wish to indulge in a little thread digging!

https://www.airliners.net/aviation-fo...ation_photography/read.main/58669/

How are your daughters these days Vasco?

Oh, and if anyone wants to bring back the travel list (see below discussion) I might even return to uploading  Smile

The forum lives because people of many different interests come to it - no, we are not all the same in our interests.

Some are primarily photographers with a side interest in aviation, others are primarily "spotters" - whether or not their main interest is in collecting "sets" - registrations, all the aircraft of a particular airline, etc. - who use photography as a means to an end without knowing, or wanting to know, too much about the technical or artistic sides of photography.

There are many "sub-types". Me, I have been interested in aircraft for longer than I can remember, and have been a photographer for many years - aviation photography is only a small part of my photography.

Too often, people in the forum denigrate others whose interests do not coincide with theirs - photographers belittle spotters and vice versa. Some criticise "artistic" shots, others want the aircraft registration to be visible in every shot, and so on.

THERE IS ROOM HERE FOR EVERYONE! Let us stop criticising those who are different from ourselves. Variety brings richness to the forum and we can all learn from each other.

Another thing I've noticed (and I don't know if it means anything or if it's just my images) is that people don't seem to be adding images to user-created photo albums any more. I've never bothered with them but I know lots of people do - especially just casual surfers of this site.

Are views the same but people just aren't bothering with the albums? Are people not creating new albums any more, or not adding to existing ones? Is this an overall sign that the site is losing popularity?

I've had quite a big-hitting picture uploaded this evening and it's already nearing 500 views. Now this time 12 months or so ago I could have expected it to be in several albums by now with so many views, however not included in a single one (as yet).

I'm a bit surprised.

That's because of the bugs I think. Often you can't open the large photos from the albums, which makes them rather pointless.
