Size Reminder

Tue Apr 07, 2009 8:07 pm

Hi All

We would like to remind everyone of the fact that when uploading photos at large sizes (1280 wide or larger) that small flaws will become more visible and photos are more likely to be rejected.

We are seeing many large uploads where quality is simply lacking.

For those who are starting out here or are getting many rejections we would advise sticking to 1024pix wide. That has the added advantage of making your photos less useable for publication, thus decreasing the chance people with bad intentions will steal your photos.

Best Regards
The A.net screening team

Hi,
From few months ago I upload at 1280 - 1400 sometimes 1600 pxl wide and my acceptance ratio decreases from 80% to 46%. For Ex. today 4 rejects for 4 pictures uploaded.

I tought people love photos in great sizes... even for mi was a new challenge as A.net regular contributor... no worth, too big effort for almost nothing...

Until 1200 pxl wide could be interesting upload here, 1400 pxl or more ====> Lots of rejets !

Regards,
Javier

Yep, especially when they steal them. No need whatsoever to upload at that size. 1100 is enough or 1200 is you want to push it.

In fact, your upload page says the minimum is 1000px wide.

This is perfectly large enough - and it deters people from misusing images.

While this is very true, it seems rather ridiculous to use camera equipment worth a couple of grand to upload photos that are less than 1MP. Personally, all my photos were uploaded at roughly 1000 x 700px for that I used a 6MP Canon 300D back when uploading. Nowadays I own a Canon 40D with 10MP but I don't upload anymore, since I've gotten more into the art of photography itself than playing by really strict rules, given by anet. I also know that if I were good enough I could break these strict rules with outstanding photos that we all see here every now and then. However it is still funny to see how we all go out and buy big cameras to upload at 1000px wide. As long as we use the cameras not for a.net only we should be fine though.  Smile

Cheers,
Sebastian

For me personally a new camera these days has very little to do with extra MPs, more with the better image quality and speed. Dont see why you would upload at 1600 just because you moved from a 10D to a 50D....

Sebastian - your comments are confusing.

Why would you want to upload a picture bigger than 1 meg in size? Anything larger than 1600 pixels wide is wasted on the web. Nobody wants to see a picture so large that the whole image can't be viewed at once.

All large file sizes do is eat up bandwidth and encourage theft.

then you are doing something wrong in your life....., if uploading at 1000px wide is the only purpose!

This is totally up to you, give it a shot!

Simply because there's no need to upload at more than 1024 pixels wide. As someone who's had photos misused (ie stolen!), I wouldn't want a moderate resolution photo on a website as it increases the risk of misuse. You can get a half decent 6x4 print from a 1600 pixel image, you won't get that from one that's only 1024. If people want a higher resolution image, all they need to do is email the photographer. It's up to them if they want to give out a 3,000 or 4,000 pixel version, or charge for the privallidge. That's were the camera resolution comes in to play; magazines like high res!

No it isn't. I may upload a 1MB photo from a 20 MB photo that I take with my 50D but from that 20 MB RAW that I shoot I'm going to get a damn fine print for myself and from the 1 MB upload I may get someone who wants to pay for a copy of the damn fine print that I make from the 20MBBig grin

I agree with this statement. I can't tell you how many dollars I have lost in the past because some one wanted a huge print of my pictures that were taken with my Minolta 7 (5MP) camera which I shot at 1200 wide. Now I have a 50D and I can provide that picture to them if asked.

While I tend to upload at 1280px if the quality is good enough, I always prefer 1024px or even 1000px.

Web doesn't need more than that - and besides, even 1280px wide images on A.NET cause the horizontal scroll bar to appear in FF3 at 1680x1050 resolution. And that's bad for the user experience. You shouldn't have to scroll to see the entire image.

So until a.net can fix that bug, I'll upload smaller images in the best interests of the end user experience.  Smile

Personally, my size of choice is 1200x800. The only time I upload at 1600 is when I'm uploading a very detailed view of a cockpit.

I'm not sure what other people around here use for monitors, but my 24" is pretty good at displaying even the large photos.

As far as large photos being stolen, that is probably true. I wouldn't want to take a 1024px if something larger was available.

Unfortunately 1024px photo doesn't always show the detail noticeable in larger photos.

Most of my 3000+ pictures here are 1200 x 800 (1200 x 900 in the early days when using the G5). 1024 is good enough but 1200 fits my screen nicely.
