I would have bought it, but it has some cosmetic blemishes - and it won't fit in my camera bag.

With Canon's new 800mm out at a fraction of the cost this thing has lost a bit of it's value IMO.

Is Canon offering a $100 rebate for this thing? Might have to jump on the opportunity!

I think the price for a new one is the same! You just have to wait 6 months for them to make it.  Smile

Oh, that lens... I'm ordering a new Canon camera and one of these lenses.  Wink

(In my dreams more like it....)  Wink I've actually got a 200-400 Nikkor on order - a bit more underwhelming, but I'll be happy with that.  Smile I couldn't quite imagine tracking a plane with this monster Canon lens - it is enormous. The field-of-view is extremely narrow.

Actually, your neighbor's garden given its minimum focusing distance (14m).  Smile

I'm 99% sure they won't actually make you a new one anymore. Like the 200F1.8L and some of Canon's other 1990's Super Tele's they were made using Lead which is now not allowed. The 1200mm used this and as such will now not be made to order for customers any more.

That looks like an awesome lens!

After reading the story, I connected my Canon FL 200mm prime to a 2x extender and a 3x extender in sequence, just to see what 1200mm is like. It was nice and long, but since the extenders effectively step down the aperture, the brightest my setup goes is about f/20. This was at night, but I could certainly make out houses, trees, etc. with the naked eye. If I pointed the camera directly at a light then that would show up, but everything else appeared pitch black in the viewfinder.
