Upgrading Canon 20D To 50D

Mon Aug 17, 2009 10:38 am

Hey guys,

I'm thinking of upgrading my 20D to a 50D. I have been reading some things on the internet about the camera and that its not 'all' that much better than the 40D. I would like to hear some of your opinions on this matter.

I'm doing a lot of photography where i need to have the photos big and the fact that the 50D takes photos 4800x is rather interesting. Also that you can crop a little with out loosing too much quality.

What do you guys think?

Just for reference this is my website www.ndjphotography.com

cheers

Wait until the end of this month. I'm hearing that the 60D/7D will be released. Then decide if you want 40D, 50D or 60D.

Seems like the advice on here has been to look for a new 40D body so how about upgrading to that. Canon squish their pixels into the sensor and some say the quality is degraded due to this. If I had the money right now, I'd be going for the 40D. There are quite a few threads on this so if you take a look down the photog forum a bit more you may find an answer similar to what you were looking for, notably Eos 40d Or 50d (by Stef247 Aug 5 2009 in Aviation Photography)

Well, there are reportedly a number of canon product announcements lined up, and on is thought to be the 60d or the 1D4,depending on who you believe. I don't have more info than that at the moment.

I have both the 40D and 50D.

I have found that the 50D is great until you use the 100-400mm L lens. Then the 50D shows up the limitations of the lens. Quite alarmingly.

So I use the 40D with 100-400 and 50D with other lenses, 24-105, 70-200, etc.

If I was to choose one body to take with all lenses then it is the 40D.

The 50D is a good camera, but partner the right lens with the right camera body in my experience.

Seems like a backward way to criticize a DSLR... because it shows the limitations of a lens!

Or put another way, prefer an inferior camera because the lens is inadequate

I have the following lenses : 100-400mm 10-22mm 60mm (macro)
Im going to test them tomorrow with the 50D. May i ask what difference you see when using the 100-400mm with the 40D and 50D?

cheers

The 50D is a wonderful camera.
Ive had the 40D and currently own a 50D A 1DsMK3 and 1Dmk3.
Many people on the net lose sight of just how we use cameras.
If all you do with your photos is view them at 100% size then get a 40D.
If you want better images to print and publish get the 50D.
Both cameras make around the same level of grain and noise when viewed at 100% view.
However as the 50D has almost 50% more MP any images you print or reduce in size will and do show markedly less noise than the 40D.
Why people insist on comparing different MP cameras at the 100% level is beyond me as when you print at say 12x8 or upload at 1280 the higher MP camera always has the advantage.
Yes when viewing a 4700 pixel image any lack of quality will show up but when resized for printing or uploading you will get the advantage of more MP. If you resize to the size of the 40D guess what you have the same size image with less noise.
And yes the 60D is round the corner..just.

Dehowie,

Thats what i was also thinking, the more MP is an advantage as i do print posters. Not sure if you have a 10-22mm lens but how it this for landscapes? How is the camera doing during night shots and long exposures? (night shots 100ISO with tripod)

Couldnt you figure that out yourself since you own the lens?  Smile

Tim,

He may not have used it before or may not have used it outside of aviation. Some lenses I own I've never used outside of aviation and to be honest I too wouldn't have much of a clue about how they perform in different situations at focal lengths/apertures/shutter speeds I rarely use.

Most likely the same as on a 20D, apart from the obvious differences in quality that apply to all lenses

Draigonair,

You might want to do a search of the forum as this questions has been asked on about 10 occasions! As a 50D user, I've provided my input on the other threads so won't go in to it here. It all comes down to budget, whether or not you'll get any benefit from the extra pixels and the lenses you are using. If you don't currently have high quality lenses or are planning on upgrading your lenses to high quality ones, go for the 40D as the extra resolution of th 50D will show any flaws.

Like Darren I am not going to repeat myself as the conclusions are pretty uniform in this and previous threads.
You could have borrowed my 50D but I gave it away(for a month or so) last Saterday  Big grin

Two spec lists are being thrown about.

http://64.13.226.237/2009/08/1-slr-coming-in-august-cr1/

Spec list two looks impressive at first (especially since it is nearly as quick as the D700 with the EN-EL4a battery), but the first one would be the better camera, despite its relative slowness - just because it would appear to be focused on some of the attributes that make the Nikon D700 very good.

If the rumours are right, then the launch could be just around the corner in day or so (one rumour) or otherwise, 1st September.
