Spotting At Vhhh (Hong Kong)

I will be heading for India next month and will be doing a lot of spotting at Mumbai Airport (my home city). I will be going SFO-HKG-BOM. I land in Hong Kong at 6:50am and my connecting flight is a 2:15pm. I am traveling through Cathay Pacific which is a 744 from SFO-HKG and later will be a A343 from HKG-BOM. Here are my questions about photo shooting in HKG..

Are there any specific spotting places in the terminals to get a good view?
Is in-terminal photography allowed at Chek Lap Kok?
Any suggestions are welcome...!

Thank You.

Hello Nishant,

There are no angry sheriff's deputies stalking the halls of the Chek Lap Kok terminal looking for suspicious lanky young men with photographic equipment in Hong Kong. You can freely snap away to your heart's content. There is no vantage point from within the terminal proper to take unobstructed photos without window glass. Nor is there any specific spot for photography inside the terminal. On the other hand, you can walk from gate 1 to gate 70 and photograph aircraft on either the north ramp or south ramp. Not sure where your departing flight will be, but the SQ A380's daily flight from Singapore should land around 1330ish, should be at the gate by 1340, if you observe the north runway you should be able to get decent shots of it taxiing off of the north runway to its gate, provided you have the time of course, or that you even care. There are plenty of photos on Airliners taken from within the terminal to give you an idea of the kind of shots you can take.

There is a viewing deck at Terminal 2, but to reach it you would have to enter Hong Kong proper through Customs. Unfortunately, the deck is operated by a private company and the deck is not open before 1100am. I don't think it would be worth your time to go through Customs, rush to the deck, snap 2 pictures, rush back through Customs and make your flight on time, unless you have a considerable delay. Plus, the viewing deck is really only optimal when the 25s are in use.

For any more questions, free to ask the guys at the Hong Kong Spotters Forum:

They're a great bunch of guys and many of them have been photographing and spotting in Hong Kong for nearly 20 years.

Hope this was of help. Have a great trip!
