Your Favourite Types Of Photography?

Tue Feb 23, 2010 12:48 am

Hi folks,

I have been passionate about photography for about five years and even more since 2 years when I first got a DSLR. I have tried my sorts of photography ranging from spotting to Concert photography passing by macro, portrait or night photography. I must say its an amazing hobby.

When it comes to choosing the two types of photography you enjoy the most, which would be your choice? Given this is an aviation site, no doubt plane spotting will be on top of many of your lists but it would be interesting to share your preference with the others.

As far as I am concerned chosing my to favourite types was not easy but I finally chose to go with Macro and concert photography. I finally bought a Macro lens and am currently in Costa Rica on holidays where I have been able to practise perfectionate the difficult field of macro phoography. I will share these pictures once I'm back in Switzerland.

So, which are your two favourite types of photography ?

I like doing aviation (obviously) but I like wildlife photography almost as much. Waterfowl and shorebirds in particular.

Concert and band photography is something I'd like to explore more as I play in a band.

Nice thread!

For me I would say travel/sight-seeing photography and waterfalls.

Hola Braulio! Que tal?

My favorite photography types are aviation because of the technical nature, and candid portraiture. I like walking around places and taking ad-lib shots of people walking around and living their lives. Landscapes have their place, too, if it's a particularly beautiful scene.

I do wish, however, that I could have learned to master that before turning to aviation. All these years of taking pictures of planes have ingrained a "SUBJECT MUST BE CENTERED" mentality into my photography, and I now severely lack that "special eye" most good photographers have. I'm trying hard to learn and broaden my horizons a bit, but old habits die hard, as they say.

hola Antonis,

As we say in Costa Rica, Pura Vida!

Aviation photography is such a passionate fiels. Unfortunately I don't get the opportunityto go spotting as much as I want and haven't yet bought a car to go around each spot of an airport to get the correct light for good pictures.
As I say photography is such a great passion with many fields to explore but you end up wanting to get better at a specific one, which in one way is good, but in anohter makes you close doors too easily on other fields!

My favourite type is moving subjects, i like the challenge of snapping an animal nice and sharply without any blurring or snapping an aircraft right without any blur. Its a great challenge and motivates me well more than still life photography.

Who says aviation photos always have to be centred? Even a.net will accept off-centre photos provided they can see the motive:

I'm happy to photograph planes most of the time, at wide-angles usually - but also long range and panning the shot at dusk (you will see more of that).

However, I've dabbled in corporate events photography as well.

When I'm photographing planes, I seem to get quite similar types of photos to one of the screeners (Mark Harris). So obviously - I'm trying to make mine a bit different to his. But sometimes, it's a bit inevitable:

Someone spoke about centered images - and this one I sort of fell into that trap:

Some day I'll re-edit the image and place those planes in the right side of the image, the way I originally intended.

Otherwise, I love to snap photos like this:

But it's so much harder when you can't simply stack filters together on the lens to reduce the shutter speed.

Ok, so when are any of you guys going to show us some examples of stuff you shoot other than aviation? Do we need another thread, or are there enough people reading this one to get people's attention?

I'd be really interested to see some examples of other stuff you guys shoot, be it wildlife, landscape, portraits, macro, etc...

Either pick some of your best recent (non-aviation) shots, or provide a link to your work. Don't be shy...

If you think this deserves a new thread, we can do that too.

My non-av stuff unfortunately is off limits - need to go through a month of approvals to get release permission.   It was part of my normal day job.

I never did events photography before - so the first time was a little scary, mainly because the subjects of interest were very well known in government circles - and when you are dealing with those sorts of high powered people, it's easy to become bossed about by them. But it was okay, and the both of them were really cool about it.   Now, after that scary first time, it's not nearly so scary.

Would be happy to do that but in the past such threads have been either locked, deleted or banished to the wilderness of Non-Av.
Personally I think photographers should be able to demonstrate their other skills in this forum and I would be more than happy to contribute.

Ah, to hell with it..... here is a start

Lot's more where they came from and more variety as well.

Like CPD I have done a considerable amount of event and corporate photography which is not in the public domain.

Didn't say it HAD to be, and I have quite a few off centers. However, I almost have the feeling of being a square peg getting hammered (by rejections, things I constantly see) into a round hole of the centered / non distant shot. I do attempt to break from the norm, but one is made to feel that things can be easier here if you just center the darn aircraft and upload.

Very nice guys. Hopefully others will catch this thread and add a lot more. I'm always interested in broadening my horizons/tastes, and if other good photographers here feel inclined to show us some of their best, I (and hopefully others) would be quite interested to see. Already Royal has me thinking about what to do the next time there's a full moon...

I'll put some up of mine when I get home.

Anything from macro (although due to budgetary constraints the closest I can get is using a +10 magnifying filter), long exposure, to...portraits of a mannequin. Some sneaky peakies:

It seems I have seen and enjoyed your photos before, well done sir! I have done a little long exposure images, but they tend to be from really low vantage points due to the limitations of a cheap mini tripod, the gorillapod has made it easier, but hopefully it can begin in earnest whenever I get round to picking up a properly sturdy tripod.

Photography is very expressive and finding something I feel might tell a story, or evoke a reaction, really drives me. I try to approach photography with no preconceived limitations or restrictions. What I consider a goods days shoot might, in reality, only result in one keeper but it liberates me to better myself for whatever takes my fancy the next time. Apart from aviation, I'm a wedding photographer, a stressful job at the best of times! I also like the subject of trees for some reason, I suppose the different forms they take has something to do with that? Architecture has always been a subject that I've felt suited me too, the endless supply of old and new buildings is stunning and every country has its own look and design.

Can't say that I have a favourite type of photography, except for aircraft. I might shoot anything that comes in front of my lense. I've done marriages, concerts, parties, wildlife, flowers, people, buildings and I see it all as opportunities to be creative.

What an interesting thread. It's great to see what others photograph.

Myself I am very lucky to have been able to go to lots of places in the past few years so I obviously have quite a few travel photographs. I like this kind of photography for being a bit more free in what's acceptable than the tight regulations of aviation photography. I can take pics I like rather than always thinking about what will pass screening.

I also like taking photographs of shipping and motor sport, especially the Le Mans 24 hours. They are both similar in style and technique to aviation though.

As for aviation my favourite style is the really close in type of shot where you can see all the details. Something like this:

Wow, some great & professional looking stuff above! For me, seems like I'm constantly taking aviation photos, then constantly editing (and of course re-editing after rejections) aviation photos.

However, I enjoy taking photos of surfing, wildlife (birds) sunsets, buildings, and travel vacations. I am also trying to get into wedding photography as a second shooter or assistant, still working on that though.

Here is a couple:

Obviously I like aviation photography, but my real passion is fire photography and other news events. As mentioned in anoher thread, this is why I want a good high iso ability. I can't post any photo's, so please enjoy the links!
