Made It To The Topshot N Then Got Rejected...

Thu Sep 16, 2010 4:40 pm

Hello fellow spotters...

well I am writing in today as something strange happened to me...
My shot of the Red Arrows made it to the top five shots of the day and appeared on the front page... and I was really delighted...

And suddenly in the morning I got a mail from one of the screeners saying that the photo that was accepted in error, and has been scheduled for deletion...   reason being the colours look un-natural...

It is still online as I type this post... but I believe I'll have to bid good bye to that shot form this website as it has been scheduled for deletion... anyways.. I hope atleast some of you enjoyed that shot...

Regards,
Arpit Agrawal

You left out the part where you sent us the original and it looked nothing like the shot you uploaded.

Ok .. come on ... is that the response from the site officials ???

In fairness it had been through the screening process & accepted .. it had to have been !
Was it passed 3 times or instant added ?

The fact is really ... a lot of people did like it , not really fair for it to be pulled ... but hey who are we to argue ?

well... I am not arguing...
n as a matter of fact... it won't really make a difference... it's your website... n I can't force you to keep my photo...
so no hard feelings..!!

and to be frank, I would again say.. I have not edited the pic in the amounts you think I did... just corrected the brightness so that the photo doesn't get rejected for being overexposed or too bright...
The colours are natural as captured by the lens... probably the weather or the lighting conditions made all the difference...

anywys.. I love my shot... (with other three thousand odd people who view it).. n I am proud of it...
I hope my future shots match the high standards of this website...

but a humble request please... either accept them or reject them at once... n don't surprise me later....

You know what, you are right. Let me take this chance to correct myself.

Arpit, while we appreciate your energy and enthusiasm with regards to your recent Red Arrows photo, we have had to remove it because it displays an unacceptable level of editing and is thus unsuitable for our database. We regret having to remove the photo after it has been accepted, but to have left the shot would have been unfair to our users who have had photos rejected for similar amounts of editing.

If you would like assistance editing your photo please solicit our Photographers Forum, or you can also contact us directly and one of our helpful staff will be glad to lend a hand.

Have a great day.

Why not give him a chance to correct the colors and reupload it using the "Reupload" feature on the site?

Well the photo is still there.....I like it, its had loads of hits so I can't be the only one...........!
Its not the best Red Arrows shot I have seen, but its different, and wee need more different shots (I think).
And its made top 3 of the PC...so I think it should stay!
Can we see the original?

The normal photo upload feature is suitable for this purpose. The reupload is for improved versions of already accepted images, not rejected ones (as highlighted above - it was accepted in error).

You could show us all the original image if you like. That will prove your point.

I saw the Pic on the Frontpage and I really liked the picture. Thought that it might be a bit Contrasty ... there is a thin line between looking real and not. I am sure the Screener crew took the right decision with checking the original.

Lets have a discussion about the G2A shots in the DB ...

ummm... It fits both of those requirements. A reupload of this image will be an improvement and the original photo was accepted. We are talking about the same photo here, right?

While a reasonable amount of contrast and/or color correction is part of any digital photographers workflow, this photo displayed extreme editing, and was thus removed. It was treated no differently than other photos that are manipulated outside of our boundaries (an example would be object cloning) and therefore it was removed.

While removal was unfortunate, it was necessary. As humans we screeners are not perfect, and mistakes do happen.

The photographer is welcome to rework and reupload the photo if he/she chooses to do so.

How is it possible to upload a different photo than the one that was screened for entry into the database?? I never even heard of this. I thought once you submitted your photo to the screeners, you were done until they got back to you.

I learn something new every day.

In my opinion I think the shot should have been left alone or at most suspended from public viewing until the photographer was given adequate time (I'd say 24-48 hours tops) to fix the discrepancies with the image and then use the reupload function to replace it with a version within guidelines, and then pull it if he failed to respond in a timely manner. From what I can tell Arpit was in full and voluntary communication about the issue and seems more than willing to correct the problem.

Well that was a pretty good effort anyhow. I hope you can find a way to edit it that they will accept - because it's clearly worth the effort.
