Help Auckland Airport Spotting (Slow Exposure)

Sun Jun 12, 2011 10:05 am

Good Evening Everyone,

I am trying to organize a photography meetup next week for some slow exposure takeoffs/landings http://www.meetup.com/The-Auckland-D...aphy-Meetup-Group/events/19061231/

Stuff like this - http://www.flickr.com/photos/exxonva...65148775/in/set-72157606064555806/

I am wondering where the best place would be for this around the Auckland airport where we could get some good shots...

I have already read the thread Spotting @ Auckland (by SabenaA340 Aug 27 2000 in Civil Aviation) So we have this noted down as a possible place but with it, it’s not the shot of the plane that is important but the light trail so if anyone as any other additional places it would be great.

Thanks
Rayna

Auckland airport is quite limited with spotting areas,I dont think the observation deck at International terminal at night would be any good,The carparks along Puhinui Rd might be okay for setting up a tripod and getting a overview of the runways.

The only place that seems plausible would be the carpark on Puhunui Rd, as pointed out by the previous post.

What you'd get (for landings anyway) would be a shot like this:

Mind you, this photo seems to be much straighter than the angle you get from that carpark so I don't know where the shot was actually taken from.

It may be on the private access roadway just past the lower carpark, however, there is a spot up at the intersection of Puhinui and Orrs Rd, you can just make out the end of the runway and the planes go almost overhead. Might be able to legally park on Orrs as well. It's sort of gated, but I think that's more to keep the hoons out who go there to make out or get on the bash but it doesn't look like a well secured area
