Photographing At Miramar And Oceana Airshows

Hello all

In September and October I will be traveling to the states, and among other things, I will be going to the airshows a MCAS Miramar and NAS Oceana.

I have been looking at some of the special Chalets tickets that they sell at these airshows. Have anyone tried these? Are they worth the money? How good are they for photography? Will you be chased away with sticks by point'n'shoot owners if you bring a DSLR??

Will you get better pictures from the around the show ground?

Also, how big a lens are required at these airshows?

Miramar is a tough show to shoot because the sun is in your face ALL day long. Plus the weather doesnt cooperate. Clouds and rain typically make an appearance at least once during the weekend, especially during the night show on Saturday night. That night show is always a bust...

I went to Oceana in 2005. I remember that being a better show for photography.

NAS Oceana has a great light until 2:00PM...Miramar is baaad.
Check my website photo reports from last few years so you can see what kind of pictures you can get.

I had a similar experience as Silver1SWA last year at Miramar. Overcast and hazy all day on Friday. The crowds are a bit lighter on Friday, so if you get there when the show opens you can get some unobstructed views of the static display flight decks. Other than that, it is a tough shoot.

What about the Chalets? Has anyone tried these? Are they any good for photography??

I tried the Flight Deck Chalet of MCAS Miaramar in 2008. The view was nice but the food was not. Just make sure that you secure your position in the front line as people start congregating toward the end of the show for blue angels. I was in the middle of the crowd and all the people stood on the chairs. Since I personally do not like putting my foot on chairs, it was difficult to take pictures in that situation.

As people mentioned above, lighting was not very good.
