Guys ... the standard is what A.net makes A.net. Too be serious, take a look at the other side. There are sometimes shoots accepted there where I would be embarrased as a uplaoder to show that picture to others.

True story... But this point is valid for a.net as well...

With all its shortcomings and occasional hiccups, the PC is the only feature on A.net that allows the photographers decide what is to end up on the front page, and is not influenced of controlled by A.net team or DM. Wouldn't it be a shame to lose it?

There are no plans to change the core principles of the photographer's choice (otherwise the name would not fit anymore). It is more about slight changes that might prevent misuse.

Thanks for taking time to clarify Stefan. Not trying to be obtuse, but since a few other people have posed a similar question, what exactly is the deal / status of the Editor's Choice photos again? I would much prefer to see the screening team active in selecting semi-current submissions they deem worthy of recognition that don't end up on the front page instead of what to me at least appears to be a feature that has been running on auto pilot for the last few years.

Thanks again.

Fyodor, in a way you are right, but we have no way of knowing if it has been set up by the photographer, or by someone unrelated trying to make a point. The photographer might be completely innocent, and should not have to read depreciatory comments about his photo.

As every photographer has opportunity for voting, somebody could upload several single shots with different ID's and votes for himself! (this should be done by small groups as well). Remember that less than 10 votes requires for PC's. IS it technically possible (or happened before?)

It looks like one the photos visible in the PC frame has been deleted from the database already. There are a couple of ordinary photos in the top 15 currently, both from the same country funnily enough.

Well, how could i check by myself ... if I dont know what Derek is refering to? But thx anyway .. I now know what he was refering to ...

We had this game allready from that group ... I dont click anymore on pictures from Iran and Russia taken by this certain group of photographers .. Thats my way of protesting.

I overall found the pictures in that category far from being top notch anyway ... might be that my taste is different to others, but seldomly I found these pictures better than e.g the Top 5. This place has become a place of Idiots who do anything for views and "fame" .. it is getting soo ridicilous ..

Yup, have to agree. It's pretty much a pyrrhic victory to get PC and frankly, totally meaningless as far as I'm concerned. Same with "hit" counts. If they're looking for approbation by the A.net community, this surely isn't the way to go about it. Manipulation for the sake of PC or hits is pretty pitiful IMHO so I won't participate in that.

PC is a wonderful feature.. and as photographers sometimes we get to vote for a ridiculous photo for a good laugh.

i believe photos that aren't worthy of PC (which get PC'd) get the wrong kind of attention..

It makes a mockery of the whole thing. As it being abused in such a fashion, the PC facility should be removed completely.

This is not a bug. The image in question was removed after it was discovered it had mistakenly been added (should have been rejected as double). Its removal is not in any way related to it being voted on for the Photographer's Choice. It was a mistake on our part for having added it, and I apologize for it having caused any inconvenience to you.

If you read the voting criteria carefully, it makes mention of the fact that votes are accumulated over a seven-day period, so if no other image has had more votes over the last seven days, it will be tops. Which leads to...

Quoting derekf (Reply 59):
Well it looks to me like that is exactly what has happened this week as well. It is becoming a bit of a joke the PC photo.

The joke is that not enough people vote to prevent only a small number of votes being needed to reach the top spot. It is a completely free and democratic process. If everyone voted as often as they could, you might see different results. If no one votes, then a small few will be able to choose which photo reaches the top, which seems to be happening more frequently. The solution is simple: get more people to vote, and get them to vote more frequently. How many times have those of you complaining about the feature voted in the past week?

And its our fault because we didnt vote more votes ( is this the correct thesis ?) on another pic ...

That the photo which is currently in top spot needed to be deleted was our fault, and what more I can do other than offer another appology, I am not sure. The fact that it was that specific photo at the top is the 'fault' of those who didn't vote for a different photo. Which one did you vote for that lost out to the current top? Is it fair to complain about a democratic process if you do not participate?

Perhaps you should read my explanation again. The image was deleted less than seven days ago, and in that time accrued enough votes to currently be top. In my personal view, this is an indictment of the fact that so few people voted on other images in the past seven days that it was left at the top.

Dana, I think what's upsetting to some is that even after being deleted, it's still in the system enough to have the PC votes it received prior to deletion counted and shown on the home page. Shouldn't deletion imply that it's been completely wiped out without record of it ever being there?

A fair point Ryan, but obviously not the only complaint being aired. To address it, instead of adding it to the 480-reply Report the Bug thread, I'll add it to the page-long (really) list of requests the screeners have outstanding for DM to work on.

Dana, I don't think you or anyone at A.net have anything to apologize over. The photo's gone, it's done with. I just want to point out (again) that for a full year uploading here I wasn't aware there was a PC vote on A.net. If a feature is incorporated in the upload process that reminds photogs to vote, for example on the final page after an upload is completed, I'm sure you'll get broader voter participation. Big phat button... "VOTE for your favorite photo!!!!" The reason I mention this is because the upload process is the only time where participating photogs are guaranteed to be logged onto the site. Don't know whether its a browser bug or what, but I noticed quite frequently I'm not logged onto the site even after I've clicked the "Save this Setting" option in the browser a trillion times, it simply doesn't retain the setting, and when I happen to go through the DB and find a photo I'd vote for I realize I'm not logged in, have to log in, go back and locate the photo again and vote. Not sure if that's particular to my browsers or A.net or what. Just saying.

I also think the PC feature would enjoy a broader participation if photos that had received PC recognition had some kind of banner "PHOTOGRAPHER'S CHOICE WINNER" on their individual page and in their DB listing to identify them as such. Yes, there's _one_ link in the PC icon on the front page that has arranged all the PC photos, but on a website that depends on linking, I think that's rather underwhelming. To me its just a part of adverting the PC feature at all and these are layout issues, but I realize A.net does things its way and there's institutional resistance to change.

Cheers!

It can take time for a deleted shot to be fully indexed out of the database. As Dana mentioned, we'll look to add a 'purge' feature to clear any shots that make the PC module unfairly immediately from the database.

There are some groups that have continued to misuse the system, I stated we have the logs as to who votes and even after this thread some have persisted. They'll be hearing from us and receiving lengthy bans for their misuse of the system.

I'm not clear on the definition of "misuse" if by misuse you mean they casting group votes? Or are they using "fake" accounts? I don't think people should be penalized for voting when the main issue is most photogs not voting. And the key point to voting is you have to be logged on to the site. And as I've mentioned already, it's quite often I'm browsing A.net I'm not logged on, even when I think I am because my browser should have retained the settings but doesn't. I still only see tthis is a layout issue, not a photographer issue. Make it easier to participate in the PC vote and incentivize the PC vote by making it more recognizable.

Cheers!

Misusing because they post on local message boards seeking votes and as you noted, some have multiple accounta and their IP address identifies them as such, it looks quite silly a person voting on their own shot multiple times. That is clear misuse of the system and those photographers will not be welcome to participate any more.

As for your browser, please send us an email at [email protected] with your OS and Browser you use and we'll look into why you're not staying logged in.

Only that one? If so, therein lies the problem. Over the last seven days, you have voted for one photo, which was only added yesterday. As has been pointed out, votes are cumulative over the seven day period, so the photo which you rail against had a six day head start. As I said, more people voting more often will make the issue a moot point very quickly.

It is clear that in its current form the PC system is fundamentally flawed and is an embarrassing addition to the front page. Sadly the A.net team can't see that and are blaming the photogs for not voting rather than than those who abuse the system.

The screeners have already said that they will take actions against those who try to undermine the Photographers Choice process. What more do you want?! There really isn't anything they can do about it either, except passing on the info (which they said they will do). They have already explained how things work and I for one am always intrigued by a look behind the scenes as it helps getting a better understanding of things, but that part is just lost on some of you guys (you complain about it in stead).

You can help them and yourself by voting on a regular basis, it's not rocket science you know. The claim "so not voting was the problem now voting only once is the problem" just blows my mind in the sense that you can't realize by yourself that it will take more than voting just once to get this feature back on track. It's almost like you're arguing for the sake or arguing.

Since the beginning of this thread I've started to vote more, but I also forget a lot that the option exists and it's only when I come across a truly exceptional photo that I think "oh, this one really deserves my vote".

Guys, I started this thread because I wanted to ask you to vote. I am not a member of the screening team just a regular photographer like many of you. There are a zillion things that I don't like about this site but I know I won't have any influence on those issues. The PCA however is an exceptional feature in this matter, any photographer can influence the outcome. We can complain about any other feature/bug/photo/acceptance criteria/whatever on this site but the one and only thing we shouldn't complain about is the PCA. It's ours! It's up to us to decide which photo gets the award.
I hate to see those "nothing special" photos on the front page occupying a prime spot for 12 hours. If we keep on voting on the right stuff we don't have to complain about groups from e.g. Russia, Ukraine or Iran.
If the feature continues to be so unpopular I would suggest to replace it with something else.
Happy voting

One simple remedy that more or less eliminates ghost/fake accounts is to limit who can vote. Today it's enough with one photo in the DB. If the limit is raised to 25 or even 50 photos in the DB it's more hassle than fun to create duplicate accounts. Or like in the Eurovision Song Contest, you can't vote on photographers from your home country

It is simply a failure to recognize that it is those who abuse the system that are the problem - not us.

I'd ask that you point out said failure, given these statements:

Quoting clickhappy (Reply 10):
For some it seems they want the hits and the attention. Sadly for them, these loopholes are closing, and only legitimate photos will be scene under the PC section. On that note, a friendly reminder, last time something like this happened the people responsible couldn't keep their mouths shut and had to brag about it, and were handed lengthy bans.
Quoting PanAm_DC10 (Reply 12):
We understand the points and issues which have been mentioned and recently we have been monitoring activity in the Photographers' Choice feature. By doing that, and from your feedback, we recognise the feature does require an update.
Quoting PanAm_DC10 (Reply 12):
Agree with your opinion on such behaviour. Each time a vote is made the photographers name is registered, to us, it is clear in some cases the same people appear to be misusing the system. If necessary, we'll contact specific people and ask them to review their activities.
Quoting clickhappy (Reply 39):
With regards to PC, we have some changes in the works. We will see how effective they are. If we need to adapt them, we will.
Quoting whisperjet (Reply 51):

There are no plans to change the core principles of the photographer's choice (otherwise the name would not fit anymore). It is more about slight changes that might prevent misuse.
Quoting dlowwa (Reply 71):
If no one votes, then a small few will be able to choose which photo reaches the top, which seems to be happening more frequently.
Quoting dlowwa (Reply 74):
That the photo which is currently in top spot needed to be deleted was our fault, and what more I can do other than offer another appology, I am not sure.
Quoting dlowwa (Reply 76):
A fair point Ryan, but obviously not the only complaint being aired. To address it, instead of adding it to the 480-reply Report the Bug thread, I'll add it to the page-long (really) list of requests the screeners have outstanding for DM to work on.
Quoting PanAm_DC10 (Reply 78):
There are some groups that have continued to misuse the system, I stated we have the logs as to who votes and even after this thread some have persisted. They'll be hearing from us and receiving lengthy bans for their misuse of the system.
Quoting PanAm_DC10 (Reply 80):
Misusing because they post on local message boards seeking votes and as you noted, some have multiple accounta and their IP address identifies them as such, it looks quite silly a person voting on their own shot multiple times. That is clear misuse of the system and those photographers will not be welcome to participate any more.
Quoting dlowwa (Reply 82):
As I said, more people voting more often will make the issue a moot point very quickly.

Personally, I think the crew understands the issue pretty well. And they're absolutely correct about the easiest fix - get more people to vote. To recap:

The Problem: those who abuse the system
The Fix: those who vote legitimately

I think what Derek is trying to say is sure, we can all vote but what good is it if we all vote on different photos then a group in whereversville huddle and bang 300 votes on a side on of a Cherokee?! There's, on any given day, several excellent photos that probably all get voted on but what good is it if the cheaters outnumber us 10:1? Having said that I do cast a vote every now and then and sadly it's very rare those photos see the PCA.

How many times have those of you complaining about the feature voted in the past week?

I agree with you 100%, but now it is time to address the problem. Let's come up with ways to get people to vote. How about we come up with ways to do that, because leaving it to us is not working.

I can come up with a few:

1. Everytime you upload you need to vote once.
2. Everytime you go to the forum, vote once.
3. Just have a pop-up reminding you to vote.
4. Send out FB / TWITTER reminders to vote.

Just some ways to think about it get more votes. The system is fine, just the use of it is the problem.

Quoting airkas1 (Reply 85):
but I also forget a lot that the option exists and it's only when I come across a truly exceptional photo that I think "oh, this one really deserves my vote".

Exactly. We should look at adding features to get people to vote. I tend to forget too.

That was also addressed by the screeners and customer service reps. It's contained in the posts I quoted in Reply 91.

I like the uploading one. As someone who has not historically voted for PC, any motivation would be good for me!

Good initiative Ron. I like your suggestions, but if I remember correctly we can only vote once every 24h (someone please correct me if I'm wrong)? That would eliminate option 2 (for me anyway), but the others are good ideas!

Quoting JohnKrist (Reply 90):
One simple remedy that more or less eliminates ghost/fake accounts is to limit who can vote. Today it's enough with one photo in the DB. If the limit is raised to 25 or even 50 photos in the DB

That should help reducing the number of bogus votes aswell.

Edit: I also agree with unattendedbag, but something that will raise the awareness of the function being there would be wecome imo.

I don't think we should be required to vote. This should be a democratic process, not a mandatory one. Besides, if we were made to vote, it would lead to misuse by people seeking the most mundane photos as a joke.

Also, we only get one vote every 12 hours. I don't want to be limited to 1 upload every 12 hours or one post in the forums every 12 hours!

I hear ya, I'm usually the most vocal when it comes to non-democratic views or policies.

Some people would love it if others were restricted to only one post every 12 hours! lol

Nah, I'm sure they could make it so every day it reset, or heck, even every week. Can you imagine how many people would be voting if every week they were required to vote once?

It could be as simple as the annoying FB banner on the bottom of the home page, maybe not even a restriction. My point is, the PC system is not broken, but we need mechanisms remind or prompt people to use it, because without the frequent use, it can be subject to abuse.

How about, in order to be eligible for the PC award, you have to have voted in the past 7 days. Or something like that.

Wrong -
The Problem: those who abuse the system
The Fix: get rid of those who abuse the system

I know what is being said but that is just trying to divert away from the problem that organized groups can abuse the system with ease.

What would be helpful if we actually the number of votes cast, then maybe we could see the scale of the problem.

Th fact that a deleted photo can (and still does!) feature highly in the PC is frankly ludicrous and a major flaw in the system . I know the reasons but it still looks ridiculous.
