Quality Difference
When I upload photos onto the site I have a huge quality difference between the photo I have just edited and the quality I see after I upload the same photo. I tried it now where I kept the edited photo open in photoshop, I then upload the photo and open the file and it's like looking at 2 completely different photos. All the colour has been drained out of my photo.. Does anyone else get this?

Are you working in sRGB?
edit-going to assume that is the problem
Under Edit-->Color Settings, make sure under working spaces RGB says sRGB and NOT Adobe RGB. Also under Color Management Policies, RGB should say Convert to Working RGB. Check the three boxes as well. This will tell you when you open a photo that isn't in sRGB, that you need to convert it, you will click continue and it does it for you.

This definitely sounds like an RGB problem. Airliners.net doesn't recognize third party or embedded color profiles. Your web browser may or may not. You should expect that other users will be viewing your photos on software that does not.
If a photo is saved in Adobe RGB or some other profile with an expanded color pallette, but displayed by a program that doesn't recognize, the result is usually flatter looking colors, and reduced saturation.

Dumbell2424 and iamlucky13 offer good advice. I think Npeterman has a related post currently on the forum.
I do various color work / formats dependent on what the output/end product needs to achieve - weddings /landscapes/HDR etc...
I went through the learning curve you describe. You wont go wrong if you set your workflow to sRGB either throughout or convert pre compression i.e. jpeg 'save for web'.
Some swear by sRGB and get very techy / animated in the pros and cons.
Totally understand your point, its so frustrating having spent quality time on an image to see it 'washed out'
I would also recommend profiling your display. I now use Colormuki - big screen difference, especially with stuff like skin tone/contrast (appreciate thats not for here).
