What Camera Gear Are You Using?

Thu Aug 18, 2011 7:15 pm

I've read through a couple of ''what camera should I get'' threads on here lately and that got me wondering what equipment are you going to town with? I don't want this to turn into a ''who has the longest'' type of thread, but just photographers discussing their own equipment and to see what brand is over, or under represented.

I use a Nikon D90 with a 70-300 and a 18-105 lense. Before I got the camera I had to decide between the Canon 550D or the D90 and thought the D90 felt much heavier and better in my hands, made a nicer shutter sound, had a sensor cleaning mechanism, more auto focus spots and I've been happy ever since. For the price, it produces rather satisfying images.

Nice shot.

I'm a Canon man myself, but would happily use Nikon and Sony too.

I shoot with a Pentax K-x, and depending on the situation, I use either an 18-55, a "Nifty Fifty", or a 55-300.
My choices were either a Nikon D5000, a Canon T1i, or the K-x. I chose the Pentax for many reasons.
During the time I was conducting my market research, i found out that Pentax DSLRs can use any lens manufactured since the 1950's. Me having a rather small budget, that was an offer I couldn't pass up on. On top of that, the K-x can do something like 5.7fps (which I think is very good for a low end DSLR), it is insanely lightweight, and it takes AA batteries, which is very useful for me as I always forget to charge up batteries.
Someday I will treat myself to one of the hi-end Pentax DSLRs, like the K5.

Here is one of the first pictures I ever took with the K-x:

I'm shooting with a Canon 7D, and almost a dozen different lens selections. I've had the privilege to shoot with many of the leading manufacturer's and they're all great. It'll often be preferences, such as ergonomics, that lead you to the camera purchase.

I shoot mostly Nikon (I have 1x d7000, 1xD300, 2x D3s, 1x D3, 1x D3x) and sometimes Canon (2x 1DmIIn, 1x 1DmIII) for digital. My favorites right now are my film cameras. I have recently starting shoot slide film again in a Nikon F5 and F6. The Fedex 757 attached was shot on Provia 100F with a 24-70 f/2.8 on a Nikon F6.

C-FMEK June 27 2011 Fuji Provia 100F by alevik123, on Flickr

For lenses - quite a selection. In Canon the 16-35 f/2.8, 24-70 f/2.8, 70-200 f/2.8, 300 f/2.8 and the 100-400. Nikon the 14-24 f/2.8, 24-70 f/2.8, 70-200 f/2.8, 300 f/2.8, 200-400 f/4, 600 f/4, 105 f/2.8, 80-400, and a couple of kit lenses. Always go for the best lens you can I always say. You'll keep them for longer than the digital bodies.

Photography for me is strictly a hobby so I'm usually in the market for the best bang for the buck. I started out with a Nikon d40 paired with the 18-55 Kit lens and the 18-200mm f3.5-5.6. I then graduated to the d3100 and the excellent Tamron 70-300 f4-5.6 and 28-75 f2.8 lenses. I now have a d7000 paired with the same Tamron lenses and I couldn't be happier. I see no reason to change this body for a long time to come however I'd like to add a couple f2.8 wide and long lenses to my collection for low light photography.

You never can beat the 'punch' of good slide! Out of interest, can slide/film images be accepted here if they feature subjects easily accessible to digital shooters?

I shoot with a Canon Rebel XSi, 70-200 L, and a 17-40 L. Oh, and a 55-250 IS which I don't use as much anymore as I use the 70-200 now. All items purchased after advice given through this forum! I'm really satisfied with the results I'm getting too.

Yes, I realize that I only have one camera and three lenses, which appears to be much less than many people on here have, but overall it's quite adequate for what and where I shoot. I've only run into a few times when I could have used a longer lens.

Hard to believe but there are quite a few people out there with a multitude of expensive gear and no idea how to get the most from it!

I just have one camera and three (soon to be four) lenses - and that does me nicely!

I used to have a 400D as a back-up camera but then I realised that the money from its sale would be better spent on a new lens. Contrary to what people say, you don't need three bodies and 46 lenses - although I do concur that sometimes a back-up body is useful.

-reminds me of back in the days of film, I used two Kodak Retina Reflex IV bodies when I was at the CNE Airshows. After one film was used up, I switched the lens to a fully loaded camerabody to continue shooting, reloading the "used" body with a fresh roll of film when there was a break in the action. This also worked great with the Nikon FE bodies that were equipped with motordrives.

I just ordered a D90, can't wait to try out some of my old prime lenses.......

Two bodies are also useful when time is of the essence. Sometimes you're really pushed for time when changing lenses, but with one lens (wide-angle perhaps) on one body and another lens (telephoto) on another you'll rarely miss a thing!

Why don't we see more action shots? For example a Nikkor 300 2.8 and a D3s could produce some fantastic nightshots with decent panning effect...

The D3S is a ridiculous camera. I've had it for a weekend and I came very close to buying it, but I just can't justify dropping that much money on a hobby I enjoy once or twice a month tops. I wish more people maxed the potential of their equipment out, like that Chris Denton guy from Sydney. His night shots are bananas and nuts.

Absolutely - the past two weekends have shot an indoor weightlifting competition and an outdoor night (American style) football game. Both required at least 6400 iso and the D3s handled that quite well. Two bodies carried with different lenses allowed switching focal lengths rather quickly. Recently some outdoor city scape night shots (not aviation) with the D3s were unbelieveable in regards to high iso quality.

I certainly believe a well exposed slide can make it here. I plan on having the 757 I linked to drum scanned for my personal collection, and a reduced size version of that would most certainly make it on.

I use a Nikon Coolpix S6000, which has turned out to be a great camera considering its size and the $150 price. I really have to watch the sun and weather conditions to get the best out of it, but that's all part of the challenge and fun.

That's all I have as well:

Canon Rebel XS/1000D
Canon EF-S 18-55 IS
Canon EF-S 55-250 IS (not used much anymore)
Canon EF 70-300 IS USM

The equipment I have has served me pretty well. I've gotten probably 4 or 5 1400 pixel images accepted here, without any more editing than I do for my usual 1200 pixel images:

I'm currently in the (very extended) process of planning my next equipment additions/changes. While I would love a camera body with better performance at ISO400 and 800, I think I will continue to work on nailing the exposures in low light instead of worrying about the noise. So with lenses in mind instead, I'm debating something better in the short to mid zoom (28-105, or maybe 50mm 1.4).
I'm watching Jeopardy. The category is worst Madonna songs. "This one from 1987 is terrible".

Its look like some statistic search having place
Anyway, this is my arsenal. Canon 50D and 70-200mm F4.0 non-IS lens and I am very happy with the result.
Sometimes I want to have something like 400mm but in average my lens is OK for most of the photos. Personally I like to be in a distance from aircraft but not very close. Wide angle lens changes aircraft forms and for me it doesn't look good.

I have a Nikon D700 and an F5, and my mostly used lenses are 17-35/2.8 AF-S, 24-70 2.8 and 70-200 2.8 VR II. I usually take the D700 with 24-70 and a little Ixus for trips. Sometimes I bring the 70-200 as well, depending on how much I feel like carrying.

However, I recently got a Minolta CLE with the little Rokkor 40 mm f2 lens, and I really like the results I've gotten out of it so far. Non-aviation related example (Color): http://farm7.static.flickr.com/6007/5998308685_75bbd0aa4c_b.jpg
Aviation-related example (b/w): http://img836.imageshack.us/img836/8308/img193r.jpg
The CLE is a very discreet little camera which takes Leica M optics and, being film, is inherently full-frame. I like.

Having restarted shooting film recently I usually process my own b/w. Currently I send all color work to a lab but since the turnaround time (especially for slide) is a bit longer than I mind waiting I'm thinking of souping that myself as well.

For a.net stuff, I have two Canon 450D (Rebel XSi) bodies. On one, I use a Canon EF-S 17-85mm f/4-5.6 IS USM and on the other I use a Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS USM. This works well, as at some locations, like the BFI Mid-Field Park, you want the long lens for take-offs and landings and the short lens for when aircraft taxi by. Previously, I used a Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 IS USM, but it just wasn't sharp enough. I still have the lens and should get rid of it...

For foreign travel, I like to travel light. We originally had a Canon PowerShot S2 IS and then got a Canon PowerShot S3 IS to supplement this. The S2 crapped out and we got another Canon PowerShot S3 IS. Then, one Canon PowerShot S3 IS crapped out and we got a Canon PowerShot SX30 IS. The S3 was a little better than the S2, but the SX30 is noticeably better than the S3. I'm thinking about getting a second Canon PowerShot SX30 IS before our next trip.

I'd call myself a fairly casual spotter (I probably go 7-8 times a year max, sometimes more, sometimes less), and for that my Canon SX100IS suits me pretty well. The color is actually much better than it seems in the pictures (that mostly gets introduced in editing- I'm trying to work on that).

Currently I tend to use the following line up for aviation photography:

Canon 7D with 70-200 f2.8LIS (+1.4x extender), 24-105 f4LIS, and a Canon 10-22. Seems to cover about 90% of what I shoot. The only thing I am missing is a little extra length.

I also have in my kit bag my old 40D, which is currently being kept as a back up but I haven't touched it since I got the 7D and I also have a Canon 17-40L which I use for general non av stuff and a 580ex on speedlight duties.

Unbelievable that it's now one of my preferred lenses!

My first gear was a 450D

Here in Brazil we pay a lot of tax and my recent big investiment was with the 7D. Now I need better glasses. Actualy I'm using a 18-135mm kit lenses | 55-250mm f4.5-5.6 | 50mm f1.8

My next buy probably will be the 100-400mm but here I'll pay more than R$4000,00 something about (us dollar here R$1.60 today)

Currently shoot all my stuff with a 7D and 5D2. I also have a 10D/1D2/400D and 1V/Eos 3 film bodies in some bags in the closet.

Lens wise i currently have...

17-40F4L | 24-105F4LIS | 70-200F2.8LIS | 100-400LIS | 15mm F2.8 Fish | 20F1.8 EX (Sigma) | 50F1.4 | 85F1.8 | 100F2.8 Macro.

I am actually in the process of adding a couple of new lenses and will be buying a 24F1.4L | 50F1.2L and 85F1.2L II next week. As you can probably guess they are not for aviation photography!

Two bodies are also useful when time is of the essence.

That and being able to worry a little less about dirt finding its way on to the sensor (a pet hate of mine).

I now have a 50D body for my preferred 70-200mm f/4L lens for the planes. This allows me to keep my 17-40mm lens on my older 40D. Only by having the two bodies with the lenses always fitted was I able to yank the camera out of the bag and snap this photo as we walked off our plane on our recent holiday:

Without two bodies there would have been no way I could have had the chance for this kind of shot - and because I don't get many chances to walk right past large airliners, it would have been an opportunity missed.

Thus I am a great believer in keeping an old body should you upgrade your camera.

That's now a much more sensible thing to do these days as image quality, pixel count etc. have got so good across the board. Used to be a much bigger difference with each new model. Anyway, the resale value isn't what it used to be with the advent of inexpensive entry level models!

I use 3 bodies (5D (old); 1D3 and 7D) - I shoot a lot on the water, and you really don't want salt spray getting in the camera when changing lenses! With 3 different crop factors it also gives me a lot of possible permutations with various lenses. Generally, the 70-200 f4;17-40, 24-105 and 500 f4 are my workhorse lenses, though I have a few others (mostly fast primes) for specialist use.

Oh and my little GF1 outfit just for fun - currently with the 20mm 1.7 and 14mm 2.8 - really looking forward to getting my hands on the new Oly 45mm 1.8 which will complete my dream travel kit ... superb quality and all will fit in my jacket pockets.

Cheers,

Colin

Ebay mate, about £80-£100 for a decent condition one if you miss it that much! While i'd never want to use it on a shoot it's a nice little thing to take for a play every now and then. Colours are rather nice SOOC.

I started off my DSLR life with a 400D and a (miserable) Sigma 18-200, soon sold the lens and got a Sigma 17-70 (much better).

Now I use a 5D Mk2 with the 70-200f4L IS (and 1.4x extender when needed), 24-105L and occasionally the 50 f1.8 for shallow DoF stuff. Not a big collection but it does all I want for the time being. I also have the 580ExII and 430ExII flashes with wireless trigger for the more artistic indoor shots, but don't really have the time to play around with the flashes now.

I also have an S90 if I don't want to carry the brick around or if security is an issue (while travelling).
I scratch my head, therefore I am.
