Hey
Anybody own the Nikon D90, and have any comments about it?
Looking to go for this as a sort of all rounder (not just aviation shots), with the option of video clips.
The kit mentioned is £670, and my budget is £700 really, just not sure if there is any equivlanet options for the same budget that would be better.....

Just noticed the D7000 with the same lens, for £300 more, and they do 10 month interest free, guessing that this option would be the preferred choice?

I've had mine for a couple of years and I really like it. I bought the kit on line. I did upgrade to the 70-300 VR. I've used the video a few times for family functions and it has worked well.

I tried a D7000 and now have a D3 and D300s, the D3 is a very different animal and looking through an FX viewfinder when shooting for a day is much more preferable, but the D300s seems little better than the D90 did in all honesty, it's just laid out similar to my D3 so it's a better fit for me, but the D90 and 70-300mm VR took a number of my shots on here and it's hard to beat really.

Thanks for the advice, really am in two minds at the moment, do i go for the D90 with 18-105 VR kit and then purchase a 70-300 lens....or go for the D7000 with 18-105 VR kit on its own.
I spot at Manchester (Egcc) and you can get pretty close, so know big need for the longer lens, and overall I would use it more as an all rounder.
Obviously the D90 has been around a while now, and want to make a purchase that I wont need to upgrade in the near future, I am no pro and take photos for memories and pleasure so whatever I purchase would be used for a fair few years to come, with the possiblity of additional lenses

I went with the D90 kit. I LOVE the D90 and the included 18-105 lens. I also bought the 70-300 lens which is also great.

It sounds like you the D90 would suit your needs better. However, I am one of those guys who if I am going to buy an expensive electronic or camera product, I want the newest.
Here are the differences between the D90 and the D7000.
The D90 has 12 MP and the D7000 has 16 MP.
The D7000 supports SDXC memory cards. (I wouldn't worry about that).
The D90 can do 4.5 frames per second and the D7000 can do 6 per second.
The D7000 has a higher ISO sensitivity.
The D7000 can take higher quality video. (Again, I wouldn't worry about that, that's what video camera are for).
Those are the main differences. The D90 is a fantastic camera and as you can see the differences are not too different. If you go with the D90, it will still be a great camera for years to come. From what you are saying, in my opinion you should go with the D90.

I can't speak for the D7000, but the D90 can definitely hold a candle with regards to more modern cameras, especially as higher ISOs. I guess the suppose the main drawbacks would be the lower FPS capability of the D90 (4.5fps) vs the D7000 (6fps) and megapixel count (if you like pixel peeping), but for all purposes, the D90 would be perfectly serviceable for general shooting IMO.
WIth regards to lenses, I'd definitely suggest getting the 70-300VR too. While it's not the best telephoto lens around, it performs very decently given it's price. It'd be nice to have the zoom range and the 70-300VR is pretty much relatively sharp throughout it's whole range (except near 300mm). Much spotting at airports other than MAN would almost certainly require a telephoto lens and it might come in handy then.

That's a tough choice. With great lenses you will get great pics from both however I believe the d7000 is more 'future proof' if you think you're going to keep upgrading your skills. I have a d7000 but image quality wise there isn't a big difference from what I've seen. The d7000 should be better in low light and have better dynamic range but again, I'm not sure with the right glass (and skill) you can easily tell the difference. If you do crop a lot or plan to do a lot of low-light photography, the d7000 should be the better choice. There are other differences that may mean more to you:

This really is becoming a tough choice, really appreciate all the advice and comments, but I think my choice is getting even harder now

Just remember, with either camera, you are making a fantastic choice. Both cameras will be great. It always isn't the camera, but the lens and also the person that makes the camera what it is. If you have the extra money, then go for the D7000. I'm sure you won't be disappointed. If you don't have enough money for the extra lens now, then go ahead and learn how to use the D7000. Learn all of the features inside and out, then move on to the next lens.

Purchased and picked up the D7000 today, its a beast!
So much more flexability than my D60, gonna take a while to master it. Should have some shots soon, trying to get out over the next couple of days.

I got the 18-105 VR (Nikkor) as it came as part of the kit. I am looking at a 70-300 in the new year though.
First results on non-aviation shots with it are stunning, such a good camera

The purchase has been made, but for anyone else that looks at this thread I can also vouch for the D90.
I have one with the 70-300VR, the Tokina 11-16 and lately with the 28-300VR and I am very pleased with it!
