Screening & Queue Status Update

Wed May 30, 2012 7:05 am

There are a couple of threads currently ongoing with discussions about the current technical issues, so will consolidate any questions and updates here.

As has been discussed, there have been some technical issues with the database related to the maintenance done to the site over the weekend. Instances of accepted images disappearing from the database and reappearing in the queue, and images simply disappearing from the queue have been widely reported. As the issues have not yet been fully resolved, screening has been stopped for the past eight hours, and will not likely start again for another eight or ten hours. By that time, we hope all the issues will have been resolved, and images that had been accepted, will again be visible on the db.

There is not much more information to pass along other than that, but if you do have any questions, we will do our best to answer. We will update when screening resumes again. Thanks for your patience everyone.

Thanks for the information Dana, I had 3 photos in the queue for the 23rd, 1 of them has disappeared.

Thanks

As of this time, we do not need updates as to how many images you are missing, or from what dates. We are expecting everything will be reset to normal and images returned to the queue or the db when the final fix is in place.

If I were to submit an image to the upload queue now, do you know if it would be affected by the current issues? I've been holding off on a couple of images because I'd rather not increase whatever problems are going on right now.

As far as we know, newly uploaded images should not be affected, but if you wish to be safe, it would be better to hold off until everything is 100% again.

Brief update: you may see a few images being added, as we will attempt to process priority requests, which shouldn't be affected. Screening has not yet resumed on the regular queue.

Just a question, since I've noticed that also a picture of mine has been involved in this issue... I mean, a previously added picture that has gone back in the queue and the image could not be retrieved since it displays "default image".

Well, apart from this, may I ask you how will this thing be carried out?
Will the former accepted pictures be restored into the DB automatically or will a new add needed?

thanks in advance

Yeah, I read about that in your first post... I am sorry but I think I wrote my question in the wrong way, since I have realized that it is quite ambiguous and easy to be misunderstood.
(I am sorry for this...)

So, just to clarify, I meant which would be the "policy" applied in the worst case that some pictures would be lost?
MAybe a re-add with the "evidence" of the confirmation acceptance mail?

Hi teopilot, should any images be lost we'd treat them as priority for reupload and most likely as you note, confirmation email with the request.

Some testing will be done and images will be seen to be added to the database as troubleshooting occurs. These images will likely not be images we have requested re-uploads on but those that are already in the queue. Some will be priority images sent through to the priority team as noted by Dana. Please try to exercise understanding and patience as the team works through this.

It's likely that the "added today" list may not reflect what's actually going on, since at lest one of the ones in that list is a shot that I remember as previously accepted. I'd say wait until there is an announcement from the crew - I'm sure they'll post about the resolution of the problem when it happens.

EDIT: Alevik beat me to it.

Okay, that explains quite a bit, I saw an image in queue of which I was pretty sure it had been accepted a while ago. During the day, I kind of accepted the thought that it was just my mind going numb

Good luck getting stuff in order again, from experience I know that database management is tricky business! Better to take your time and get it right than to rush to a solution and risk making things even worse.

cheers

Another short update:

You will soon see new images slowly starting to be added. We will only be screening images submitted after the 20th, as images before then could possible be affected. The situation with images added but then disappearing from the db will hopefully be resolved at the same time as the missing images from the queue, but it looks like it may take a little longer than hoped.

Again, thank you all for your patience with this.

So if we have photos pending in the upload queue from May 20th, will these be discarded or just screened at a later date? Also, when this is all fixed, will the view counter be re-set to the correct values prior to this issue?
Thanks

They will be screened later. We are starting from the 21st just to be safe. The affected images go up until ones submitted on the 19th, but we didn't want the possibility of affected images getting mixed in. Once things are fixed, images from the 19th/20th will be the first to be screened.

Quoting cv880m (Reply 18):

Not 100% sure, but I assume this will be the case. To be honest though, view counts are a low priority compared to restoring the lost images.

I hate to be a bother, but thought I'd ask this.

My image that was bumped back to the queue has now vanished from the queue, but is not in the DB, or rejected photos list.

Normal?

In my case, they disappeared from the queue, then re-appeared in the queue again, then disappeared again and re-appeared once more, without ever returning into the DB. Probably, normal.

Like Dana said, they are working on having things back to normal so we will be noticing things like this. The best thing is for all of us to wait and let them work on it and also wait until they come back and tell us everything is ok. So let try to be calm cause all of these questions dosen't help.

Just my two cents

Please kindly read the first couple post. The site is currently having problem with the database and it is being work on. My advice is wait until everything is back to normal with the database and try to upload again.

For any images uploaded pre-20th, you will have to be patient until things are sorted out.

This is quite normal when synchronising databases, if a write operation fails the system will perform a roll back to it's previous state, so images can seem to pop in and out of the queue.

There is nothing else we can do right now but wait patiently until we get an "All clear" from our team of developers.

Not wishing to add to anyone's burden and this is possibly unrelated, but a couple of weeks ago I did have some trouble getting a particular image to upload. After pressing the 'OK Done' button everything seemed normal. No warning messages, but the image simply did not show up in the queue. I had to try three times to get the image in the queue. I thought nothing of it at the time. A similar thing happened a couple of weeks prior to that incident, but I put it down to user error.

Hi all,

got an image rejected today (uploaded on the 21st). The queue shows 14 (max is 15), but I am unable to upload another image, which is strange, as it should be possible. This happened just few hours ago. If this kind of problem is already known, I apolozige for keeping you guys busy.

Cheers,

I wish the crew and developers all the best in resolving the current crisis. My situation is that images I uploaded on May 23, 24 and 25th have disappeared from the upload queue. About 6 photos are involved. Those I uploaded on the 26th and after are on the upload queue.

It is now 6.15am Eastern time and there is no upload queue for May 31, 2012 (2012-05-31).

Regarding uploading it seems its been locked by the developers so no images are being uploaded at present,I just tried and no luck,Issue has been noted and been passed to the developers so please be patient,Hopefully we can start uploading again soon.

Yes. My uploads for May 21, 2012 were screened today. Thanks for that. I did not upload on May 22, 2012 but I uploaded on May 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28 etc. The photos uploaded on May 23, 24 and 25th are missing. I will wait until this whole crisis is resolved before deciding what to do with those missing photos. I appreciate all your efforts. I was only reporting a situation.

I had one that I uploaded on the 15th and was rejected on the 24th added back into the queue. I have since deleted it since deleted it since I thought the upload issues were the result of it being added back into the queue giving me 5 instead of the 4 that I currently have. The one I uploaded on the 25th also has the problem that some other people have been having and it disappears and reappears in the queue.

I lost a picture of an Elster B. It was first rejected. After appealing it was accepted. My picture counter was 183 but the picture of the Elster was missing in the list. Now the counter is reduced to 182 and of course the picture is also missing. I have not the ID-Number of the picture because I had not recieved an accept-e-mail last week for this pic.

Thank you for your input everyone, but this point, we do not need any more reports of images appearing/disappearing from the queue or db - we are aware that there is a major issue with this that has affected many people. I didn't notice troubles with my photos that are currently in queue, however it is not possible to upload new images. After couple attempts to do that I've got message "Maximum number of photos in queue reached". Actually there are only 9 of maximum available 15.

Okay, so my queue (I imagine like everyone else's?) now looks as it should, but three already accepted images which reverted to that queue have now vanished. Would it be best for me to simply upload them again and when the problem's solved send an email to priority to get them re-added? Or should I just sit it out and wait to see if they can be traced somehow?

Cheers,
