I am considering a short trip to Moscow in the Spring and wondered if anyone reading this forum has any experience there? I've done a small amount of research and the picture appears to be mixed as to whether or not it is allowed. I would be flying into DME and would like to know:
1) Am I likely to be arrested or worse for pulling the camera out in or around the terminal?
2) If photography is tolerated, are there any worthwhile spots in or around the airport? I did read something about an abandoned village near the perimeter fence which might be a possibility. Is anyone aware of this?
3) Is it safe off the airport as an obviously western tourist to be walking around with a camera in full view?
Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi Tim,
I went to Moscow last summer for some spotting and it worked out a lot better than expected.
I did DME, VKO and CKL and had absolutely no problems with the authorities. It's hard to tell what the official situation is in Russia these days but we met quite a few spotters around the airports who seemed quite relaxed.
Especially in DME there are some nice spots alongside the runway. There are some trees to stand on that allow you to shoot over the fence.
The biggest challenge is actually getting to the spotting locations which is not easy if you are not used to the cyrillic alphabet and if you don't know the exact mini bus numbers for the trip.

Generally situation is rather fine to photographers and it is much better than it was years ago. Crime situation might is worse than in UK' however it is not something terrible. Shit can happened with everybody but generally Russia is much safer than many people abroad think about it.

I am not Russian however I have been three times and the only time I have been approached by security was while taking pics at a military airbase with Su-24s. Generally it is no problem from what I understand to take pics at civil airports and even Chkalovsky is pretty easy and safe. Fyodor and other local Russian spotters know more of course. At DME I have taken pics from the parking lot before without problems. The real bummer is that almost all the traffic at Moscow's civil airports is now Western types. If you want to see no Boeing or Airbus and want the classic roar of Soviet airliners, go to Chkalovsky. Vnukovo also has some Russian types still flying.

Thanks very much for your responses. I do feel somewhat reassured hearing your experiences. I'd be particularly interested to hear if anyone can recommend a good location at DME, during afternoon, which is within easy reach of the terminal, either on foot or public transport.

Edit - In reply to sovietjet; it would be a little disappointing to only see western types. Obviously one of the big attractions of being at a Russian airport is seeing a bit more variety than I would at home!

As I'm not a spotter but media aviation photographer I do not know much on current situation with locations (I saw guys had found many new ones but myself I had DME near-by-wall spotting about 5 years ago). So on certain issues it is better to ask other local guys who are often for spotting at the airports.
