Any Experiences On The Nikon D7100

Sun Mar 31, 2013 5:45 am

Hi all,
Thinking of buying a nikon D7100. Wondering if anyone here has a testimony of the product. Also how does the camera body work for plane spotting? After looking at online reviews, I think it is a pretty good body, but I'm thinking about its performance for plane spotting and how about the image quality?

Thanks

Unless you're a professional, plane spotting doesn't require an expensive body. There are many shots on here that came from entry level ones including some of mine.

The D7100 is an upgrade to an already great body, the D7000, so image quality should be superb. You'll need good lenses to take advantage of it though.

After looking at the sample shots on Nikon's web site I was actually quite impressed with how much detail the D7100 seems to be able to resolve. But, as Darren said, you'll really need superb lenses to take advantage of the extra resolution and the D7000 is already a fantastic body.

IMHO, the biggest improvement in the D7100 over the D7000 is actually the better AF system, not necessarily the extra resolution.

I agree, and was tempted (for just a little while) to sell my D7000, but after I looked at my miniscule lens collection, and considered how much unused potential the current body has, I decided the money is better spent on decent lenses.

Thanks for the replies, seems that most of us here thinks of buying a new lens rather than a new body. Currently, I'm using a Nikon D5000, which is pretty dated in terms of quality. If I buy myself a D7000, IMO it's better to directly upgrade to the new D7100.

In the meantime, I'm using a Nikkor 70-300VR for plane spotting.

Agreed. If I had to do it all over again, I'd definitely spring for the D7100, but you really can't go wrong with either.

From the pictures I've seen here and on other sites, and from what I've read about it, it's a great lens. It won't match the quality and contrast of a prime tele, but it should be even more responsive with the improved focusing system of the D7100.

Thanks for your responses
Btw, are there any photos in the database taken with the D7100? Would like to see its performance for plane spotting...

i've bought one not long ago and the image quality combined with 70-200VR is superb.

The only downside is the RAW buffer. Only 6 frames on CH, disappointing somewhat. Although it has been sufficient to use for civilian plane spotting, if you're intending to use it for fast jets at airshows, you should try to get a D300s or D7000 instead.

Is the D7000 faster than D7100?

Any idea when the D7100 will be released in Indonesia? I can't find them in my local shop yet.

Worth noting that the D7100 has an additional 1.3x crop mode, so whilst the 70-300mm VR loses performance beyond 200mm, overall it offers a 2x crop at 16MP giving you a field of view equivalent to 400mm! Hopefully more than adequate for those on a tighter budget.

While this is true, most free photo editing programs can also add this feature to any digital camera in existence.

While having the crop mode cover part of the viewfinder may help in framing, it's worth keeping in mind how crop mode works.

And you're still generally better off zooming if you can than cropping.

You know, I was going to say you could go to "Photos > Advanced Search" and type "D7100" in the remarks field, as some photographers list what equipment they're using...

...but all that search seems to accomplish is returning all 2+ million photos in the database. All of the other search fields appear to work, however.

Is this a known bug or should it be reported to the staff?

Typing "D7100" in the "keyword" box on the homepage search returns no results, but typing in "D7000" returns just over 1,000 photos.

Edit: That's probably why you got all the photos in the database, as it must be set up to return everything rather than nothing when the search term can't be found.

Unfortunately, no. It doesn't matter what search term I use. The Remarks field in the Advanced Search tool always returns, "Displaying photos 1 to 15 from a total of 2,137,061 matching your criteria."

D700, D7000, landing, wing, livery, etc all give the same result.

But all the other fields in the advanced search tool appear to work.

On the other hand, while I'd fallen out of the habit of using the basic search tool over the years, it seems to have improved enough to apparently answer the question at hand.

Another question, how will this body work for portraits and other daily photography (landscape, food)?

Among cameras in the same class (APS-C sized sensors), the D7100 is about as good as gets for overall image quality, and with moving subjects, and frequently high contrast situations, plane spotting is arguably the most challenging of the situations you've asked about.

While other models are no doubt on par, the only way to appreciably beat D7100's image quality would be to move up to a full frame camera, but you'll paying more for the body, and probably more for some of your lenses.

So don't stress about it. You can't really go wrong with the D7100.

There is a good website where you can purchase the new Nikon d 7100 now at a very good price.
At the moment they have the camera in stock, but I don’t know how long it will last

I believe some key dealers in Jakarta had it but all of them were gone. A Nikon rep told me last week   Wait for a couple more weeks, I'm sure the new stock is coming.

i've used my d7100 for spotting and it's superb in image quality. in day to day shoots i dont have any issues. the camera is light, powerful, and very pleasant to shoot with overall. but there is one draw back...

i really dont understand why nikon has capped the RAW buffer to 6 frames on high speed shooting. The D7000 takes about 10 or so RAW shots on full 6fps.
