End Of An Era.

Mon Nov 25, 2013 6:13 am

Today the longest running screener on the site, Gray Watt aka Granite, has decided to hang up his screeners duties. 14 years he screened, and was the first screener brought in from Johan. A straight shooter as you'll ever meet, a keen sense of humor, and an eye for picking out clonend images from the queue.

You will be missed Gary. A true leader, your legacy will continue on.

Gary deserves a big round of applause. In his 14 years with Airliners.net he has screened 403529 photos!!! He has been a major factor in shaping the site and making it to what it is today. He's always been helpful to others giving good advice and managed to apply Airliners.net's sometimes stringent acceptance criteria with a great amount of common sense.

Thank you a lot, Gary!

Not to mention screening thousands of film images, which add a great historical aspect to the database.

Best wishes Gary, and thanks for your dedication to the site.

Gary,
Sorry to see you go - part of the rock, the foundations on which the site was built ! His ability to spot cloning was unequalled and I think he trained most of us in that.

Gary always had an abundance of common sense and it was always a pleasure to work with him, especially with the oldies and he became a friend I have yet to meet.

All the best Gary

I don't think we can thank Gary enough for what he has done for all of us who contribute to the site. Gary has been a pillar of the site, and he has been fundamental in shaping Airliners.net into what it is today.

Personally, he has helped me a lot to improve my editing, particularly the old scans..

Thank you a lot Gary for all, hope to see you soon!

Cheers,

Andrés

Hello Gary.

I'd like to join colleagues in thanking you for your sterling service to the A.net community. You've certainly invested a lot of time and effort on our behalf.

I haven't forgotten the personal editing help you offered to me when I first joined the site nearly 10 years ago now.

I wish you the very best.

Wow
Truly the end of en era, making Royal and Andy the last screeners from the old days.
400000+ photos screened is quite a big achievement, and i guess this does not include the screened reuploads.
All the best to you Gary

Gary,
Thanks from all Almaty spotters for screening our photos and for giving a chance for some of them to appear on this wonderful aviation website. Please let me know if you decide to visit Almaty. I am here to help!

Its a big loss to the screening team to see Gary leave, He has been a big help to all the screening team over the years with current and past screeners and has put in a huge amount of time and effort with all the old scans that we have seen uploaded over the years.

All the best to Gary in the future and maybe one day he will find the time to re-join the screening team.

Cheers Mark

Thanks Gary for your service to this site and all the best.

It was Gary who convinced me to go digital many years ago with a Canon D30 - so I have much to both thank and curse him for!

Anyway, well done for an outstanding job over the years - often with less appreciation than the job deserves. Anet will be hard pressed to fill your shoes!

Cheers,

Colin

I'm too new to have gotten to know Gary personally, but I'm sure some of my images must have passed under his keen gaze. And certainly, all that aside, Gary has made a.net what it is, and for that he deserves the appreciation of everyone who posts and uploads here.

Cheers Gary, and good luck for the future.

You will sure be missed here, but also always be part of this sites history, be it as photographer, screener, head screener or forum member

Best of luck with whatever you choose to do next.

Looks like I'm almost a month late to the party, but congrats to Gary on a successful "career" here. I remember the late night/early morning screening sessions back in 2001 that Gary, AirNikon and I would have. The stuff we used to see and talk about was hilarious. Then we had to become serious and we couldn't write snarky comments to the photogs.

Hard to believe that was SO long ago. Hope you're sticking around in some way, Gary.
