Interesting reading for anyone using or buying super zooms. One thing that surprised me is how well the now fairly ancient Canon 100-400 stands up. But in terms of image quality, the new Tamron seems well worth considering, esp as I suspect it's version of IS will be better than the old Canon.

The remaining question for me would be how well does AF work?

Of course, the elephant in the room is as ever the almost mythical replacement for the Canon 100-400. I pretty sure it will be superior to the Tamron is most departments, but I also bet it will be around twice the price.

BTW, having (perhaps foolishly) sold my 100-400 some years ago, I have been waiting with some frustration for a suitable replacement - by any maker. 5 ot 6 years later the only candidate was the ridiculously priced 200-400, so this summer I was forced to buy a 100-400 for the 2nd time. Going by my track record that should guarantee a replacement will arrive this year!

While I'm not really in the market for a long telephoto, that price is extremely attractive. And 600mm would be great for some of the pseudo-astro stuff I've been shooting lately.

Anyway, I can dream, can't I.....

This is quite an interesting lens for me as I've been looking for something longer to compliment my 70-200+1.4x set up for some while (ie years) without costing an arm and a leg.
I'm looking forward to seeing some aviation examples with this lens.

Does anyone have any experience of Tamron's IS system (VC)? As far as I can see it does not have modes. If it only works in static mode, then the inability to pan would be a non starter for me - but possibly it auto-detects panning, so a switch isn't needed.

Yes I do. I was using a 70-300mm 4-5.6 Di SP VC USD on my Canon for a while .
To answer your question: On this lense the IS "VC" System does not have modes, it only works in static mode.


I don't know about the new lens, perhaps they (Tamron) improved their VC system?

Pity - the would seriously restrict the usefulness of this lens for my purposes.

I've done a little more research and discovered that Tamron's VC doesn't need modes as it auto detects panning  

If it can achieve the claimed 4 stops (I'd be happy with 3) compensation while panning, then I'm very interested in this lens - certainly enough to see if I can get my hands on one to try it out.
