Florida Aviation Photography 2014 Recap

This past weekend was the conclusion of the 25th year of the very successful Miami gathering.

We had over 100 visitors from as far away as Japan and Australia.

There were two sold out ramp tours of FLL (60 people) and MIA (80 people) with two buses each (see pictures).

It was rebranded for this year with new logo,T-shirts,patches etc.

Florida Aviation Photography 2014


January 15 – 19th 2014

The January gathering in Miami for aviation photographers has been a regular feature for almost 25 years hosted by Eddy Gual of Miami.

Photographers from around the world come together for a few days of photography talks, photography at local airports such as MIA, FLL, OPF, FXE, TMB, slide trading and renewing old friendships.

With the advent of digital, the gathering has gone through significant changes but we do have practitioners of film/slide attending along with numerous digital photographers. The goal is to share aviation and the passion for aviation photography.

This year we are diversifying further with a wider range of evening talks, slide trading opportunities, ramp tours at FLL and MIA.

You are welcome to join. We will post more info as we get closer to the event.

Currently, we are aiming for roughly the same time next year i.e. the days leading up to the MLK holiday.

So approximate dates in 2015 are January 14,15,16 and 17th 2015

Once the organizing committee meets next week and firms up the dates, I will confirm it.

It was an awesome few days... Suresh, Eddy, Vic, Kev, Steven, Luimer, Don, Bruce and the rest of the Florida Aviation Photography crew looked after all of us visitors really well. Dade County (Lonny) and Broward County Aviation Departments put on two great ramp tours at Miami International and Fort Lauderdale - the latter blessed with wall to wall sunshine - and we had some great evening presentations, dinners and drinking sessions. Well worth the trip, and I'm already looking forward to doing it all again next January!!! Thanks to everyone involved in making happen - you guys are amazing. And thanks to everyone who was there - it was a great social event as well as a great break in the sunshine away from the European winter!

Something rare around here??? Lots of chances to shoot the Fry's / Sharks Boeing 727 during the FLL ramp tour!

My first time and I could best sum it up by saying that it exceeded my expectations! Great photo ops, and enjoyed meeting some very fine folks who with whom to talk shop! Inhaled plenty of jet fumes and savored the aroma of burning rubber. Thanks to the organizers of this fantastic event. Will definitely plan to join it in 2015!

I have to admit that the Fort Lauderdale weather was perfect! And as noted already, we had one great special aircraft to shoot! For Miami, it was a pity that the weather didn't play along as well as it did the day before, but then again, any time spent on a ramp, no matter the weather is better than time at work!

It was great to see so many friends again and there were a couple that were missed this year! But, thanks to the organizers - what an absolutely great event it was - can't wait for next year!!!

What an awesome time it was!!... Great job by all of the Team.

Looking forward to 2015!

This Years Convention was one of the best. We had many attendees from around the world, which added to the overall atmosphere. Five full days of presentations, slide tradings, ramp tours and reuniting with old friends make this event one of very best out there. A lot of hard work was put into the convention, which resulted in an enjoyable and smooth experience for everyone with very little hiccups.

On behalf of the planning committee: myshelf, Vic,Suresh, Daniel, Eddy, Luimer , Don and Kev, we hope to see you here next year!

One of the guys is even wearing the custom "Florida Aviation Photography" shit the organisers got for all attendees - several of the others probably were too, but the cold breeze early on rather dictated coats for a while!!!

Hahahaha..yes! But we all know what Andy was meaning!  


Matt Coleman, Stephen McIninch and Walter Wilson model the "sh*t" on the MIA ramp while Aaron Carter wears a jacket over his! (Note the unique Latin Cargo plane on the top right that was one of the special aircraft photographed on the tour and uploaded here and elsewhere).

I will also be posting updates here too hence you will know about it. We expect to open registration as early June this year due to popularity. The dates have been fixed for 2015 and are:

January 14,15,16 and 17th 2015

Some people fly in a few days before and/or stay a few days longer so that they can do extra photography.

Tentatively:
January 14th night will be the first social gathering.
January 15th will be the FLL tour
January 16th will be the MIA tour

Each of the nights (15,16,17) will have night presentations/talks/slide trading at the hotel.

There will be a small administrative fee to cover costs of the conference room, t-shirts etc. This past year was $20.

I think the administrative costs for next year will be slightly higher (not been determined yet) but I doubt it will cross a multiple of one or two of this year's cost. We are trying to give more back to the attendees such as food,water, snacks and better conference space,raffle items,speakers etc hence that will drive costs up a bit. It was done on a shoestring budget this year. We like to do more for next year.

The admin fee was $20 total for 2014. It will probably go up a little bit for 2015 but that will be offset with added benefits to the attendees to justify the increase. All proceeds are used to support the conference such as the conference rooms,raffle items, etc

The Comfort Suites Hotel on the north side of the airport was used in 2014. It will probably be the same for 2015 due to the price, ease of use and proximity to MIA.

Usual structure is:
Wed night- Introduction/social gathering
Thursday-FLL ramp tour + night gathering at conference hotel for evening talks
Friday-MIA ramp tour + evening talks like Thursday
Saturday- People go photographing at their selected locations as they wish+ evening talks
Sunday -People go photographing according to their choice

Some people arrive a few days earlier so that they can do some additional days of shooting. Similarly, some people stay a few days longer.
