SYD Observation Deck Closing

Wed Feb 19, 2014 11:07 am

Spotters in Australia were abruptly told today that the observation deck at SYD's international terminal was closing on 3 March. Many great images have been taken from up there and it's sad to see it getting shut down.

Noooooo!! I've only been there once, but it was a great spot to watch planes!
Sad to see it go.

Looks like more and more airports close the observation decks. DUS only opens on weekends (I mean the one at the train station, not the terminal). And it looks like other airports will follow.

But why? What is the problem about having observation decks? They don't do any harm...

I suspect that cost cutting is the major reason (though may be disguised as 'security'). I would wager that increasingly potential public liability and the cost of bringing long standing areas up to current codes is at the root of many closures.

Cheers,

Colin

In the case of SYD, it was neglected to the point that the steel is rusting badly and they probably can't be bothered fixing it. They obviously don't see the benefits of these places.. The carparking fees going directly towards that.. etc.

or the $20 train fare... hasn't been the same since the new Qantas club was built in any case!

A little reminder of the sort of thing you could do before the Qantas club was built..

Is the photo of the bird with the bins related to the story in any way?

I appreciate a photo of an aircraft may have garnered more attention.

True, it isn't the same.. But it's still a fine place for afternoon 16 arrivals. I think I was there once before the QF F lounge was built..

Who knows.. Maybe something to do with the fact that spotting and photography at SYD is set to become a heck of a lot harder, despite what they say.

Hi all,
This is sad news.
I have spent probably thousands of hours at SYD over my life span spotting ... With all of my preteen and teenage years spotting spent at the observation deck of SYD international terminal as well as the old Ansett 'finger' spot and the old TAA/Australian/EastWest open air deck.
SAC could invest some money, build decent facilities and publicize them ... And sit back and reap the rewards. So many people I know would linger longer and spend $$$ in food and drink (and car park fees) if they could actually watch their loved ones plane take off! Now, many people leave as soon as the loved ones go through the customs entrance as there is no incentive to stay any longer.
I'm sad about this.
Looks like I will have to do a quick trip to SYD in the next week for one last spot of spotting at what was once such a magnificent place, as Chris Griffiths photo above demonstrates.
Farewell, old friend.
Bunumuring.

Stupid policy.

The terrace at AMS - fortunately still open - must have been what rised my interest in planes when I was a small kid.

Not that I expect airports to care about enthousiasts much, but they should care about families with kids having a good time at the airport. These make much better neighbours.
