Air To Air Shots

Wed Mar 05, 2014 2:59 am

Good evening from the greater Los Angles area. A question, how do they get those wonderful shots of the aircraft at Los Angeles and Sydney that are posted as air to air shots?

I hear in Sydney it runs north of $800 per hour, so definitely not cheap.

From the site Kaphias posted, they have this page:
http://www.star-helicopters.com/aerialservices_planespottingrates.html

Quote:
All Flight Time is based on engine startup to engine shutdown:
Robinson R44 Raven II = $550 hour (1 to 3 Plane Spotters)
Robinson R44 Raven I = $500 hour (1 to 3 Plane Spotters)
Robinson R22 Beta II = $290 hour (1 Plane Spotter)
Robinson R22 Beta II Instrument Trainer = $300 hour (1 Plane Spotter)

There is no minimum flight time for Plane Spotting Photography flights and these rates apply only to the time the engine is running. Time is measured by an engine Hobbs meter, which records the engine running time measured in 1/10th hour increments.

Apart from Los Angeles and Sydney, do you know any other airports which you can do heli spotting ?

I remember Sam Chui made heli spotting at MIA and another photographer at SXM.

One can do heli-spotting at BOS but it's not as cost effective as LAX. I forget the name of the company but they are based out of BVY which is at least a 10 min ride each way which would leave you with less than 40 minutes for spotting. That and they charge in excess of $700 per hour. Weather is also always a factor whereas in LAX it's a bit more predictable.
