Wed Mar 05, 2014 3:24 pm

Yesterday, we had in a group of aviation photographers and FlightRadar24 founder Mikael Robertsson to help test out the new airside viewing deck in Heathrow Terminal 4, View Heathrow.

Nice Job, thanks for doing this. Wish someday I can be there, never been to UK yet.

Airside?

Is it not open to the public then?

Hey Derek - it is airside in Terminal 4. This visit was arranged with special visitor security passes. We're planning some landside opportunities for enthusiasts in the summer though.

This is not a purpose built area for enthusiasts but the airport have taken an unused area and converted it so that the travelling public have somewhere that they can watch what is happening at the airport. The view over the airport is good and whilst it is not ideal for photography, as Tony has shown, it is not bad either and I think that any travellers that choose to use it will find it a great facility in terminal 4.

I think the airport have done a good job in talking to the enthusiasts and they are to be congratulated for interacting with us. Of course, we would all like something like the Queen's Building again but that would cost a fortune and this facility has been created without massive expense and in a very short time. Getting better facilities is unlikely without dialogue and at least (at last?) that dialogue is taking place. Praise it rather than knocking it - it is a start !

Hope so. Looking forward to what you guys can provide.. It might be tempting to make a trip half way round the world to use

I was there a few weeks ago and wrote a blogpost about it if someone would like to read. I also included some examples of photos. Tony's photo kind of confirms my thoughts that during daytime, it could be a nice spot for photography aswell. Also, I fully agree with Mick.

Mick and Tony have pretty much covered the new area in question, photography is dificult, but not impossible.

Green tinted double glazing and a few lightposts to dodge, but not bad,

70-200mm lens is sufficent for runway traffic, but you will need a small lens for the cul-de-sac

Adding to what all have said, a rubber lens hood helps a lot (almost necessary), and on sunny days the low morning/evening light is the best. You get the best results when shooting straight forward through the thick glass, but there you will meet quite some obstacles. Traffic turning for eastern gates at T4 gets quite close, while aircraft taxiing towards 27L are a bit distant, so ideal focal range would be somewhere between 50 and 400 mm. Overall a nice and (still) rather quiet place.
