This Did Make Me Laugh.....

Fri Jul 18, 2014 7:32 am

Among a depressing whitewash of rejections, this one did make smile.

https://www.airliners.net/addphotos/r...150714_fwwow_d7000_01_dsc_8120.jpg

Reject reason: heat haze, grass everywhere in front of A/C quality blurry motiv soft oversharpened personal

I know! That was the point really. I thought it made for an interesting image. I should have known better shouldn't I?

What also made me chuckle was that I got a few size rejections for uncropped images straight from the camera. I'm rarely lucky enough to be able to get away without cropping at all and my satisfaction at achieving that has been tempered with a rejection. Serves me right.....

I'm not sure what you expected tbh?

Nice try however it doesn't even look like grass?

Oh, I expected it to be rejected, as most of my photos are rejected, but I thought I'd give it try anyway as being something more unusual.
As I said, the rejection reason did make me laugh as it implied I thought it was a normal, clean sharp image and hadn't noticed the heat haze and dirt flying around. As if......

I have to agree with Airplanepics, the rejection was inevitable with this one. It's a good shot, the composition and grass everywhere add to it for me, but it's not for this site.

Which sort of made it a pointless exercise uploading it?

Looks like an eyecatcher on the other site! Take it there, they will love it, that's what I am doing with my weird stuff too

I agree it probably it isn't for this site, but if it had a girl in a bikini, that would be OK.
To be honest Darren, it was a pointless exercise uploading anything here any more. Still at least I can still laugh about it......ho ho..

Derek
I have my own version of the rejected A380 (not uploaded)

It did look quite spectacular and it was the only aircraft that created such a grass storm.
We must have been standing quite close to each other !

I wouldn't have even realized it was grass. To me, it just looks like something went horrendously wrong when you shot and/or processed it.

With 2100+ images accepted here, I'd have said so, yes.

The screener realized it was grass as they said so in the rejection personal.

It's odd though, we can have images accepted where an aircraft is largely obscured by a cloud of vapour generated by the aircraft itself and yet if it is shrouded with dirt and heat haze, also generated by the aircraft, it deemed unacceptable here. Oh well, back in my box......

At first I wondered at the point of Silver1SWA's post until I saw this...   , the agenda.....

Of course there is an agenda, that's point of a discussion forum. You are of course free to join in that debate anytime you like.

I thought it was reasonable point to make - shrouded in vapour = good, shrouded in heat haze = bad. Why?

Because heathaze usually makes your photo worse in terms of quality/sharpness, while vapor does not necessarily do that. Vapor also adds to the atmosphere of a photo in my opinion.
(yes, I know heathaze CAN work in a photographer's favor at times).

I appreciate you trying to start a discussion, but arguing why vapor is good and heathaze isn't is kind of silly IMHO.

I think that A380 shot would have been just awesome with a composition like this:

I know the aircraft climbs like a rocket on airshows, any chance you have a similar frame as the ones above?

Derek,

pardon my ignorance, but A380 on your photo is 'blurred' (for lack of a better term) by heat-haze, grass, and dirt? I kinda like it, but I was under impression that you have applied some filters or edited the original photo.

Nonetheless, as I said before, I kinda like it, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

Thanks for the clarification!

Cheers,

Andrej

Well, Gabor posted a couple images that are great examples, I think.

To me, your image looks like it was taken through thick, dirty glass, and heavily cropped on top of that. Obviously I'm not saying that's what you did - that's just the way it looks to me. So while I understand what you were trying to do, I don't think it works.

Quoting derekf (Thread starter):
What also made me chuckle was that I got a few size rejections for uncropped images straight from the camera.

Can you post a couple of these? It doesn't do much good to mention it but not show what you're talking about.

Forgot to check that earlier. Derek had 3 rejected for size (size was not the only reason in 2 cases).
All three photos are 1024*690 with the copyright banner. The aspect ratio needs to be between 3:2 and 3:4, if your photo is 1024px wide the height with the banner has to be between 695 and 780 pixels. We tolerate 5 pixels above the max and below the minimum sizes. 690 thus is considered acceptable but exactly on the limit including the tolerance.

What I do not understand is how an uncropped photo out of a dslr can fall out of the 3:2 aspect ratio limit.

Derek, if you wish you can appeal the one that had been rejected for size only. I think it's not sharp enough though but the size is within the limits.

Thanks for that.

This was rejected just for size.

This for size and soft

https://www.airliners.net/addphotos/r...150714_fwznw_d7000_01_dsc_8211.jpg

I use a Nikon D7000 and the images come out as 4928x3264 which is 1024x678 when resized. I normally to ratio of about 1 to 1.48 which keeps the ratios about right. I didn't think uncropped images would be problem but I didn't check.

Derek
I would have cropped the Trescal one a bit and I think that by carefully doing so you could just about remove that horrible distracting bottom right corner. It is worth a re-edit I think

Size is actually the least contentious of rejection reasons, they are right or not, barring mistakes.

This is indeed consistent with the images you uploaded. The banner is 12pixels "high", 678+12=690, which is 5 pixels less than 3:2. I have ZERO experience with modern Nikon DSLRs but this suggests the sensor is not 3:2. A 3:2 sensor would give you an uncropped image of 4928*3285. Very weird, imo.

I noticed there are other photographers who fall out of the size requirements by a few pixels, I never understood why but I think it has something to do with Nikon. Their most usual numbers are 1200*807 iso 1200*812

Just checked my camera, 5760*3840 is exactly 3:2 as advertised. All in all not a big issue but since you brought up the size rejections you had I thought it might be interesting to look into it.

Looked up a few different Nikon cameras. The divided ratios are as follows:

D600 / D800: 1.498
D5200 / D7100: 1.500
D3 / D4: 1.502
D5000 / D90 / D300: 1.506
D5100: 1.510

Nothing huge, but it is interesting.

I don't know about the others but the NEF files are as I said, 4928 by 3264 which is 1:1.509. Resized that is 1024x678.

My D80 is 3872 by 2592 which is 1:1.494 or 1024 by 685 and so is well within the limits.

If uncropped images from particular sensors on popular cameras are falling foul of size limits then I think the size limits need to change, albeit not by much.

I don't think we should change anything. As stated above we allow a 5 pixel tolerance and even your photos were within that limit.
I think it's nice to be aware of the reason why some photos are a little off the limit though.

The situation is quite similar, but in my opinion the resulting images are quite far apart. Yours is far less affected by heat haze, and is pretty sharp, with good contrast.

I liked the effect the "flying" grass was creating... It also reminded my of the Dutch heli-team "Grasshoppers"
