Canon Announces 50.6 Megapixel, EOS 5DS

Fri Feb 06, 2015 6:13 am

Something many had been waiting for.

Finally:

http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consum...andard_display/high_resolution_eos

From Canon's website:

Marking a new standard in high-resolution digital SLR photography, the Canon
EOS 5DS camera shatters the status quo with a new 50.6 Megapixel, full-frame
CMOS sensor and dual DIGIC 6 Image Processors. Perfect for studio, commercial,
fine art, landscape, architectural, portrait and wedding photography, and
large-scale printing, the EOS 5DS represents the ultimate combination of EOS
performance and ultra-high megapixel capture. Joining the EOS 5DS is the
EOS 5DS R, which adds an LPF* (low-pass filter) cancellation effect, for specialized
applications where pixel-level sharpness and detail are desired.

The price is pretty much ok for what I originally thought.

Let the comments begin.

Impressive. If it's a whole new sensor (fresh tech) then I'm loking forward to seeing what changes, if any, they've made to the typical Canon characteristics - colour rendition, dynamic range in particular.

Cheers

It all sounds quite good, release date I have seen something around June 2015, and the 5Ds R around US$3900... Not cheap...

But I want one

Great looking camera for landscape, fashion and fine art photographers! An impressive move by Canon but overkill for a lot of applications. Will be interested to see some of tech trickle down to the next gen version of cameras.

If dynamic range isn't imoroved much over the 5D3 then this will not be considered a great landscape camera and landscape shooters will continue to flock to Nikon.

Chuck Westfall has said there is no change to dynamic range. However I have read that colour rendition is improved.

On the one hand, I think 50mp is overkill for most uses. On the other hand, the extreme "croppability" makes the body a cheaper alternative to any of the Canon big white telephotos.

Yay the camera i've always wanted to crop my aviation photos down to 1024px!!!!

But seriously, lovely looking piece of kit and if I win the lottery i'll get one but a bit overkill for what I need right now. 20mp is plenty enough for me to get aviation shots so i'll be more interested in the 5D4 when that sufaces rather than a 5DS.

Huge disappointment for anyone shooting video regularly. I was hoping for more. It's a "but i've got 50 megapixels dude' pixel-counter camera.

It's a huge disappointment for anyone who was expecting this to be a 5D Mark III replacement and direct competitor to the Nikon D810. This is not that camera everyone was hoping for. The rumored and anticipated 5D Mark IV will likely be that camera. These new cameras are geared for shooting in controlled lighting. Studio, fashion and art photographers are very interested.

Can someone please explain this LPF thing ?

( not in techinal terms but as if explaining to a kindergarden kid)

The LPF (Low Pass Filter) also referred to as an anti-aliasing filter, is used to eliminate moire in digital images.

Moire is that sort of wavy, raindow coloured pattern you sometimes see in photographs of fabrics or other fine, repetitive textures.

The LPF eliminate moire by slightly blurring the image. (Most DSLRs use an LPF).

A camera without an LPF will produce sharper images, but at the risk of causing moire in your images (which is a pig to remove in post processing).

If you are a landscape shooter, you'll almost never encounter moire, so it may be worth taking advantage of the extra sharpness of a non LPF camera.

If you shoot a lot of architecture, fashion or the like, moire is likely to be a problem, so LPF is a good thing.

For aviation, the most likely place you will see moire I can think of is in airline liveries which consist of closely spaced stripes.

Cheers,

Colin

thanks for the explanation, I finally get it   for the past few days I had no idea

I have 5dmii at the moment, If I can afford this camera then my 70-200 becomes 320 and my sigma 150-500 becomes 800 ( they have a setting where it crops the sensor by 1.6 if desired ) so a great boost to long distance shots.

And it's a pretty sizable image even when cropped - 19-odd megapixels! That's more than the 18MP Canon 7D, which was Canon's biggest APSC camera not too long ago!

We live in exciting times.

You can also just crop them by hand in post-processing.

The 5D2 actually has pretty good croppability, in my opinion. I'd imagine this new camera wouldn't be THAT much better, just given that the individual pixels are a good deal smaller. I could be wrong, though.

Is everyone sure that this camera isn't the 5D3 replacement?

Anyway, from my perspective, I have no desire to handle 50 MP RAW files.

That is bad news. I struggle with the DR of the 5D3 sensor in some situations and get seriously jealous of the sensor being used in the Sony A7... Lets hope Canon keep working on it and improve the DR in the next 5D line.

The 5Ds from the test photogs is reported to have an extra 2 stops DR at low ISO.
Hence the low cap on Max ISO.
Sounds like its tailored for landscape etc like the D800 etc.

Over the 5D3? You have a link to the test?

I can't locate a source, but I did see a comment on a forum mentioning a reviewer that claims an extra two stops of dynamic range over the 7D2. How that compares to the 5D3, I'm not sure.

Either way, this seems to be encouraging news for Canon shooters.

I have read that the sensor for this camera is same as the 7D mark 2, but scaled up to full sensor size.

Doubtful, because the ISO specs would have been much better.

What you may have read is that the pixel size on this sensor is just about equal to the 7D2.

No idea whether it's the same sensor aside from that.
