Tomorrow Planespotting - Dslr Settings Tips

Fri Feb 20, 2015 11:55 pm

Dear anyone who reads this

Me and my team are going tomorrow at our local airport BKPR to do planespotting and I personally need your help instantly!

I am using a Canon 1000D(Rebel XS), which is not the best one, and a Canon Ultrasonic EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM lens.

The day is perfect, sunny, clear, no clouds at all, so nothing to make problem.

What are your tips for the best camera settings guys?

I mean what shutter speed should I use, ISO, apperture and anything else...

I will be approx. 30m in the grass aside from the runway, so I'll be very near to the aircrafts.

Many thanks and appreciate your help!

Kind regards

There are no best settings as it depends on the light. Always have the sun on your back so the aircraft is illuminated and the scene isn't backlit. ISO should be as low as possible to give you the best shutter speeds that you want, ISO 100 if its sunny, 200 is still fine if the sun isn't too strong. Aperture of f/8 will be about the sweet spot for your lens. Make sure this gives you an acceptable shutter speed for what you're trying to achieve. If the sun is strong, you might need to dial in -1/3 exposure compensation but that is less of a problem in winter.

The main thing, enjoy your time at the runway.

Your camera might not be the best, but certainly isn't a bad one! There are no bad DSLRs. You can produce airliners.net worthy images with it for sure.

The first two are backlit so won't be accepted here. The others need processing / editing according to the upload criteria for here. As they are, they aren't acceptable for uploading here. Nice shots though for starters.

If you can get the editing right you might as well just set your camera to Auto everything.
Your photos are like your children, you will always find them perfect.
